This is an exciting opportunity to join to Fleet and Workshop team in the role of Advanced Engineering Technician. Based within the Council’s in house Fleet and Workshop operation a proactive and motivated person is required to help maintain and repair the Council’s diverse fleet of vehicles. Our fleet is made up of dustcarts or refuse collection vehicles, double deck buses, coaches, minibuses, vans, vans with tipping bodies, road sweepers and gritting vehicles to name a few! Certainly if you are looking a variety of vehicles to work on you will find that with us!
Some of the duties and responsibilities of an Advanced Engineering Technician are:
- Diagnose and enact repairs on a variety of vehicles.
- Conduct periodic maintenance inspections and complete the inspections and relate paperwork to the required standards.
- Place orders to enable suitable parts to be ordered to enact repairs.
- Assist colleagues when required.
- Mentor and develop individuals whom are apprentices or work experience placements.
- Prepare vehicles for the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s MOT test and on occasion complete MOT testing as a delegated tester.
- Ensure the Workshop and other working areas are kept clean and tidy.

In addition to excel at the role you will:
Be able to work on your own initiative, proactive and be able to work to deadlines.
- Be able to work collaboratively and creatively with a with a diverse range of colleagues.
- Hold a City and Guilds Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance technician or equivalent or IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician in either Large Commercial Vehicle or Bus and Coach.
- Preferably have demonstrable experience with a diverse municipal fleet however this is not essential.
- Hold a full car/category B driving licence valid for the UK.
- Preferably hold either a category C or D driving licence valid for the UK.
Our workshop facility is modern and well equipped, our facilities include an onsite Authorised Testing Facility for class six MOTs, inhouse testing of class four, five and seven vehicles for MOT, tachograph calibration equipment, we also have an onsite body shop. We have an annual training programme to ensure your further development with us.
We can offer you:
A thirty-six-hour week starting at £22.41 per hour rising to £23.27 per hour.
Overtime paid at £26.89 per hour, with Overtime available daily.
Tool allowance.
No compulsory weekend working.
No compulsory night work or on call work.
Annual leave of 28 days per year, plus Public Holidays (under 5 years service).

Applicants should note due to the nature of the work applicants will be expected to be onsite at the Council’s vehicle workshop in Ilford the majority of their working time, however staff are also required to work from sites in Hornchurch or attend other sites in the London Boroughs of Redbridge or Havering on occasion.

Salary range
- £42,060 - £43,680 per year
