Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a Deputy Business Manager to join our Children’s Services team.

The team delivers vital support that keeps services running smoothly and compliant.

By managing administration, data, finance, and co-ordination, we enable colleagues to spend more time supporting children and families.

Our work ensures the council meets its statutory duties and helps achieve positive outcomes for residents across Milton Keynes. As Deputy Business Manager, you’ll play a key role in leading and co-ordinating business support services across Children’s Services while providing direct support to Heads of Service and deputising for the Business Manager. You’ll help ensure critical administrative functions, statutory processes, financial activities, and information systems operate effectively so that services can focus on delivering the best possible outcomes for children, young people, and families.

This is a rewarding opportunity to lead a dedicated team, shape high-quality support services, and contribute to a collaborative culture that reflects our values of being dedicated, respectful, and collaborative. Working closely with colleagues, partners, councillors, and members of the public, you’ll help ensure services remain responsive, efficient, and focused on the needs of our communities.

Site-Based role

This is a Site-Based role, and you’ll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Interviews for this role will be held on 18th August 2026

At Milton Keynes City Council, we aim to make a difference every day. We’re dedicated, respectful and collaborative. We act as one council, and we work hard to create cleaner, safer and healthier communities while tackling inequalities and supporting people to thrive.

  • Lead on providing comprehensive support to Heads of Service, including managing diaries, correspondence, reports, presentations, project documentation, and meetings.
  • Work collaboratively to prioritise workloads across business support teams and ensure statutory meetings, records, and processes are completed accurately and on time.
  • Ensure effective management, coaching, and development of colleagues while promoting professional standards and consistent service delivery.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining accurate information systems, supporting reporting requirements, and ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and statutory requirements.
  • Contribute to financial administration and corporate initiatives, including health and safety, business continuity, and service improvement activities.
Ideal Candidate
  • NVQ Level 4 in Management or an equivalent qualification, or significant administrative experience that demonstrates your ability to operate at this level.
  • You bring experience of managing and supporting a team in a busy environment with competing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Your ability to build positive working relationships enables you to work confidently with colleagues, partners, councillors, external agencies, and members of the public.
  • Experience in handling sensitive and confidential information allows you to exercise sound judgement, tact, and discretion.

  • Proven skills in organising workloads, solving problems, and making informed decisions help you deliver high-quality outcomes and maintain service standards

As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we’ll carry out an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, (unless you are currently registered with the DBS Update Service).
