Coventry City Council
locationCoventry, UK

ExpiresExpires: Expiring in 1 month
Education
Part time
£13.05 per hour

The Education Entitlement Service (EES) strives to deliver outstanding services for our customers, predominantly the children of Coventry, who may require access to education or alternative education provision. We ensure vulnerable children are appropriately supported; have a voice, which hopefully leads to their high achievement and excellent progress.

The EES is made up of a diverse range of teams all working together to recognise, support and apply innovative solutions to address the growing issues in relation to trying to educate some of our most vulnerable pupils in schools.

The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) supports newly arrived children in the admission process into Education and monitors Children Missing Education (CME). Officers may make home visits to investigate family circumstances, with special attention given to safeguarding concerns.

Multilingual Assistants work directly with children in both primary and secondary schools, providing bilingual support for children who speak English as an Additional Language.

    Our Values

In line with our One Coventry Values, we want to ensure that our communities are represented across our workforce. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. We particularly welcome applicants from minority ethnic, LGBT+, disabled and neurodiverse communities to make a real difference to our residents so that equity and respect remains at the heart of everything we do.

    Our Values are:

    • Open and fair: We are fair, open, and transparent.
    • Nurture and develop: We help and encourage everyone to be their best and do their best.
    • Engage and empower: We talk and listen to others, working together as one.
    • Create and innovate: We embrace new ways of working to continuously improve.
    • Own and be accountable: We work together to deliver the best services for our residents.
    • Value and respect: We put diversity and inclusion at the heart of all we do.

    What is the job role?

The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service maintains a casual register of people with good language skills to work as bilingual education assistants in nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools across Coventry and the surrounding area, as well as with other Coventry City Council Departments. You will primarily be supporting newly arrived children to settle into school and begin to learn English.

This is a casual post. We anticipate there being a need for the languages listed; however, we cannot make any guarantee that work will be available.

Interviews are provisionally booked to take place on 17 July 2026 and/or 20 July 2026, and will be conducted in-person in a City Council building in Coventry.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and as such, appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

    Who are we looking for?

    You will need:

    • To be fluent and literate in one or more of the languages listed below
    • To have a good command of written and spoken English
    • To be willing to work in nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools and colleges across the city and attend ad hoc meetings
    • To be available for at least 4 mornings or 4 afternoons a week, or a mixture of both during normal school opening times
    • To be able to travel to schools and other education providers across the city

We currently need people who can communicate verbally and in writing in one or more of the following languages:

Amharic, Kuridsh Sorani, Nepali, Pashto, Tigrinya

Please list any other languages spoken in the personal statement section on your application form.

If you need help or support to complete your application, please visit our accessibility page to see how we can assist you.

    • Members of the Armed Forces and veterans
    • Are currently in care or have previously been in care
    • If you consider yourself to be disabled or if you have a long-term health condition
