We value diverse perspectives and experiences and are striving to create a workplace culture that is inclusive, is accepting of all and is free from discrimination and bias.

The Housing Enforcement Team works to ensure that privately rented homes are safe, well managed and meet legal standards. The team investigates complaints from residents, carries out inspections, provides advice to landlords and tenants, and takes enforcement action where housing conditions fall below acceptable standards. The team delivers a range of statutory services that help protect residents, improve housing conditions and support safe, sustainable communities across the city. The Trainee Environmental Health Officer will join an experienced team of regulatory professionals and receive structured support and development whilst contributing to the delivery of these essential public services.

    Our Values

In line with our One Coventry Values, we want to ensure that our communities are represented across our workforce. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. We particularly welcome applicants from minority ethnic, LGBT+, disabled and neurodiverse communities to make a real difference to our residents so that equity and respect remains at the heart of everything we do.

    Our Values are:

    • Open and fair: We are fair, open, and transparent.
    • Nurture and develop: We help and encourage everyone to be their best and do their best.
    • Engage and empower: We talk and listen to others, working together as one.
    • Create and innovate: We embrace new ways of working to continuously improve.
    • Own and be accountable: We work together to deliver the best services for our residents.
    • Value and respect: We put diversity and inclusion at the heart of all we do.

    What is the job role?

The Trainee Environmental Health Officer role provides a structured development opportunity for an individual working towards becoming a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer. The post holder will receive training and practical experience while supporting the team to investigate complaints, inspect privately rented homes, provide advice to residents and property owners, gather evidence and assist with enforcement activity where legal standards are not met. Working under the supervision of experienced officers, the trainee will develop the knowledge, skills and professional competence required to deliver regulatory services that help protect public health, improve housing conditions and support safe communities.

All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.

    Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual, with three or more year's relevant experience in an environmental, housing or regulatory based setting; who is committed to developing a career in Environmental Health and improving the quality and safety of housing. The successful candidate will have strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills, the ability to work with a wide range of residents, businesses and partner organisations, and the willingness to balance academic study with practical workplace learning. We are seeking someone who is keen to learn, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and committed to developing the knowledge, skills and professional competence required to become a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer.

As this role is linked to the University of Wolverhampton's Environmental Health Degree Apprenticeship, applicants must be eligible for admission to the University's programme as a condition of appointment. This normally requires one of the following:

    • 3 Levels at grades CCC or above
    • A BTEC Extended Diploma at grades MMM or above
    • An Access to Higher Education Diploma (60 credits), with at least 45 credits at Level 3 and achieved at Merit standard or above.
    • An equivalent Level 3 qualification, such as a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Environmental Health or a related subject.

Applicants should also hold GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade 4 (formerly Grade C) or above, or an equivalent qualification. Candidates who do not currently hold these qualifications must be able to achieve an approved Level 2 English and Mathematics qualification before completion of the apprenticeship programme.

Please note: Appointment to this post will be conditional upon the successful candidate meeting the University of Wolverhampton's entry requirements, being accepted onto the Environmental Health Degree Apprenticeship programme, and being available to commence the University's induction and study programme from September 2026.
