Are you a qualified Teacher of the Deaf or an experienced teacher, eager to develop and progress your career by teaching deaf students and removing barriers?

Wandsworth Sensory Support Service is a leading provider of education for children and young people aged 0 – 25 years with a sensory impairment. The Service has excellent facilities and resources, including both primary and secondary resources bases, and is part of a supportive and nurturing working environment.

Can you join us and support Wandsworth Deaf children and young people to transform their lives and help them build an aspirational future?

About the role

This is a fantastic and rare opportunity for an experienced Teacher of the Deaf or an outstanding teacher who is willing to undertake the mandatory training course, to join our friendly, supportive team of specialist teachers. Working across a variety of settings, you will be part of a team committed to providing high quality support to deaf pupils across the borough.

Your work will be crucial to the development of children and young people with hearing needs. You will be a natural relationship-builder, working closely with families which may include home visits and supporting them through hospital appointments. You will apply a holistic approach with a key focus on family centred activities and partnership working. Your creative ways to work with children and families will be parallel in removing barriers for them to learn and develop. You will take key part in developing cultural opportunities including community projects such as the short break offer tailored to the sensory needs of children and young people.

The Service has a strong link with the local hospital that opens opportunities to work in close partnership with healthcare professionals.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Qualified Teacher with Qualified Teacher Status.
  • Experience of teaching deaf children and young people or transferrable skills and experience.
  • Confidence in exploring and adopting new technology and software.
  • Flexibility to be deployed based on the needs of the service.
  • Being a team player and working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Resilient and positive attitude with confidence in dealing with safeguarding issues.

If you do not hold the mandatory qualification, you must have completed a statutory induction period and be willing to undertake the part-time, two-year Teacher of the Deaf training.

We can offer you:

  • Enthusiastic dynamic and talented team.
  • Highly specialist teaching and learning environment.
  • Opportunity to undertake recognised qualifications.
  • Excellent opportunities for CPD.
  • Staff health and wellbeing programme.
  • Warm positive working environment where everyone is valued.
