About Us

This is an exciting opportunity to join Oxfordshire County Councils Fire and Rescue Service fleet workshops at Headquarters in Kidlington where employees are highly valued and staff retention is high. We are looking to recruit one individual to join our highly trained team of technicians who at times work with minimum supervision to provide a high level of support to the organisation.

Fire Service Workshops maintain a varied fleet of vehicles and specialist operational firefighting equipment, this ranges from light commercial vehicles and cars through to LGVs with a large portfolio of specialised fleet and equipment such as hydraulic rescue tools, Ladders, various Firefighting pumps and hose branches.


About the Role

Working to the Fire Services high standards and the standards as laid down by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), your daily duties will include carrying out repairs, diagnostic investigations,

Service / Safety inspections, on a varied fleet of vehicles and specialised firefighting equipment. Primarily you will be working out of our Fire Service workshop in Kidlington but will also be required to travel around the county to all 25 Fire stations.

Working hours are Monday – Thursday 7.30am to 4.30pm and on Friday 7.30 – 12.30pm. As a requirement of the role, for 1 week in every 6, you will be required to participate in 24hr stand-by duties as part of a duty rota system.


About you

It is essential that you are a fully qualified time served Heavy goods vehicle mechanic and have previous experience of working in a commercial vehicle garage, experience in servicing and repairing vehicles and interpreting the requirements of maintenance schedules.

Qualified to City & Guilds, or BTEC level 3 in Motor Vehicles or equivalent.

Along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you’ll have a flexible approach, the ability to follow instructions, work unsupervised or as part of a team.

Proven ability to work effectively to deadlines and adapt to urgent re-prioritising of workload.

You will need to hold a current, valid driving licence. LGV, CE driving licence is desirable.

Experience in diagnosing vehicle mechanical/electrical faults using diagnostics software and remedying them, a sound knowledge of modern vehicle systems including can-bus and firmware.

Knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

Experience on electric hybrid and hydrogen vehicles.

Basic IT skills including email and computer software systems.

A short theory test is required (15 minutes) to be completed prior to interview.
