Brentwood Borough Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Planning Enforcement Officer to join its Planning Enforcement team. This is a key role within a proactive and well-regarded service, offering the opportunity to work across a diverse and sensitive planning landscape, including extensive Metropolitan Green Belt, established residential areas and strategically important development sites.
The Role
As a Senior Enforcement Officer, you will play a leading role in investigating and resolving breaches of planning control, ensuring that development across the Borough is delivered in accordance with adopted policy and approved permissions.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing a complex caseload of enforcement investigations, including high-profile and sensitive cases
- Preparing and serving enforcement notices, breach of condition notices and associated legal documentation
- Leading negotiations to achieve proportionate and expedient resolutions
- Providing professional advice to Members, colleagues, and stakeholders
- Supporting appeals, including the preparation of statements and evidence
- Mentoring and supporting enforcement officers and contributing to service improvement
About You
We are seeking a candidate who can demonstrate:
- Substantial experience in planning enforcement, ideally within a local authority context
- A sound understanding of planning legislation, policy and enforcement practice
- Proven ability to manage complex and contentious cases through to resolution
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills
- Confidence in providing clear, robust, and defensible professional advice
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach with sound judgement and resilience
A relevant planning qualification is desirable but not essential provided you have the practicable experience we are seeking.
