We are looking for a positive, flexible and enthusiastic AMHP to join our Core AMHP Team.

The team is supportive, welcoming and knowledgeable and we’re keen to recruit someone who will contribute to this dynamic as well as being independently confident in their practice. We’re keen to promote AMHP’s who can assert a socially informed, personalised model of assessment and support for those experiencing mental distress, often at times of significant crisis.

About the Role

Skilled in risk management, you will be able to work in partnership with people, their families, communities and across our interagency colleagues to help to identify the most appropriate options for support. You will be able to provide specialist support and advice to colleagues and peers across Leicestershire County Council as needed. Core AMHP’s take an active role in developing the service and the successful candidate will be encouraged to play a part in this ongoing.

We are aware of the challenging and demanding role of the AMHP and continue to work hard to encourage a working pattern that promotes resilience and a positive work/ life balance for our core staff. There is some flexibility on which days and shifts this role can cover within our core hours but for part time staff this will generally be 2 days a week on rota completing assessments under the Mental Health Act 1983, with 1 days administration time (which also gives the opportunity to take back TOIL).

Working in a core team of 5 FTE AMHP’s and supported by pooled AMHP’s from our locality teams across the County, you will be working on a rota of split shifts (either 08:30- 17:00 or 12:00- 20:00, Monday to Friday) to complete Mental Health Act considerations and assessments for the people of Leicestershire and Rutland. Ideally you will be an experienced AMHP professional, however we are happy to encourage applications from all levels of AMHP experience from diverse social work backgrounds.

At times additional tasks such as CTO considerations, social circumstances reports, Tribunal/ Managers hearing attendance, safeguarding enquiries, and other social care duties as per the job description may be required. We also have an expectation that AMHP’s undertake their stage 3 Higher Specialist training and provide PMA support to trainee AMHP’s, as well as providing staff with a comprehensive package of AMHP specific and mandatory training. On occasions of exceptional demand, we may also require core AMHP’s to complete Mental Health Act assessments on their administration days, but aim to protect this time as far as possible with all additional tasks being negotiated and completed within your agreed hours.

Any additional hours accrued due to the unpredictable nature of Mental Health Act assessments will be remunerated as TOIL or paid back if this cannot be accommodated in line with our local policy. Travel outside of the Leicestershire and Rutland area may be required at times, however this will be agreed in advance with the AMHP team manager and is usually an exceptional occurrence.

A DBS enhanced check for a regulated activity is required for this post.

For information on our approach to the recruitment of ex-offenders, please see our policy statement.

About You

To apply for this post, it is essential that you:

  • Be a registered social worker, mental health nurse, occupational therapist or clinical psychologist and have completed the required approved mental health professional training.
  • Have experience of assessing a range of complex needs in the fields of mental health and/or learning disability, and/or brain injury and/or older and disabled adults.
  • Have highly developed analytical skills and experience of providing effective assessment and risk management and of person-centred, solution focussed and resource efficient options.
  • Have knowledge of social work methodologies, social care policies such as asset based social work, and relevant legislation including The Care Act, Mental Health Act, and Mental Capacity Act.
  • Be a confident communicator who is skilled in diplomacy, persuasion, assertiveness, and conflict management and able to build effective working relationships.
  • Be able to work proactively both as an individual and as part of a team and know when to seek advice and support from others.
  • Be able to supervise, coach and mentor less experienced social care practitioners.

In addition, we also expect you to share our commitment to our values and to delivering accessible and inclusive services which meet the needs of all of our residents. You will be asked to demonstrate your understanding of these commitments as part of the selection process.

Reasonable adjustments will be considered for applicants with a disability. We are a Disability Confident Employer.
