  • Are you seeking an opportunity where you will be part of a sociable and supportive team?
  • Are you looking for working arrangements that enhance your work-life balance?

Brentwood Borough Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Planning Enforcement Officer to join its Planning Enforcement team. This is a key role within a proactive and well-regarded service, offering the opportunity to work across a diverse and sensitive planning landscape, including extensive Metropolitan Green Belt, established residential areas and strategically important development sites.

The Role

As a Senior Enforcement Officer, you will play a leading role in investigating and resolving breaches of planning control, ensuring that development across the Borough is delivered in accordance with adopted policy and approved permissions.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a complex caseload of enforcement investigations, including high-profile and sensitive cases
  • Preparing and serving enforcement notices, breach of condition notices and associated legal documentation
  • Leading negotiations to achieve proportionate and expedient resolutions
  • Providing professional advice to Members, colleagues, and stakeholders
  • Supporting appeals, including the preparation of statements and evidence
  • Mentoring and supporting enforcement officers and contributing to service improvement

About You

We are seeking a candidate who can demonstrate:

  • Substantial experience in planning enforcement, ideally within a local authority context
  • A sound understanding of planning legislation, policy and enforcement practice
  • Proven ability to manage complex and contentious cases through to resolution
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills
  • Confidence in providing clear, robust, and defensible professional advice
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach with sound judgement and resilience

A relevant planning qualification is desirable but not essential provided you have the practicable experience we are seeking.

Why Brentwood?

Brentwood offers a distinctive and rewarding working environment:

  • A predominantly Green Belt Borough, presenting unique and varied enforcement challenges
  • A strong emphasis on place quality, design and policy-led decision making
  • Exposure to both strategic growth pressures and rural protection issues

What We Offer

  • Hybrid working with a flexible approach to home and office-based working
  • A supportive and collaborative team culture
  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression
  • Competitive salary and local government pension scheme
  • Generous annual leave entitlement

Join Us

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced enforcement professional seeking to take the next step in their career within a forward-thinking authority.

If you are committed to upholding planning standards, can operate confidently in a complex regulatory environment, and are motivated to make a tangible difference to the quality of development, we would welcome your application.
