Job Title: Travel Trainer
Salary: £27,694 progressing to £31,022 per annum – pending pay award
Hours: 37 hours (flexibility in start and finish times is needed)
Location: Mainly covering West Hertfordshire and countywide on occasions
Contract: 2 Year Fixed Term Contract or Secondment

About us

The Travel Training team work closely with young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) attending schools and colleges to deliver an accredited programme which aims to provide young people with the skills to be able to travel independently from home to school/college.

Alongside high levels of face to face work with students in the community, Travel Trainers work together as a team to deliver Travel Training initiatives in schools to support young people with their journey to independence.

In order to generate referrals, the Team develop and maintain strong professional relationships with schools, Colleges and partner agencies within HCC to identify young people who fit the programmes criteria and who are suitable for the programme.

The Travel Training team is established and highly regarded within Hertfordshire and provides a consistent training programme. You can make a real difference to young people with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in helping them develop life changing skills which will enable them to develop their independence and confidence which can then enhance their social, educational and employment opportunities.

About the role

The role requires working with young people with an EHCP at KS3 - KS5 who have been identified by the school/ college, from partner agencies and referrals and assigned by the line manager as pupils who will benefit from Travel Training.

The focus of the role is to:

  • Work face to face with young people in the community to support them to become independent
  • Identify and prioritise young people who are most likely to benefit from travel training.
  • Ensure eligibility criteria is met and that they are suitable for the programme.
  • Maintaining accurate records of students’ progress and reporting to line manager.

The postholder will be required to:

  • Develop the travel training skills of the students, in the classroom and in the community, assisting students in class based and practical activities where applicable.
  • You will have face to face meetings with families and 1:1 support with young people while out in the community. Excellent communication skills, empathy, patience and the ability to understand individual needs are vital attributes.
  • The role involves planning and managing your own caseload and work patterns whilst being supported by the Travel Trainer manager.
  • The post holder will be required to keep accurate records and manage own workload to keep records up to date in line with deadlines.
  • The ability to communicate professionally via email, telephone and face to face with partner agencies, young people and their families is essential.
  • As part of this role, you will be required to travel to sites across the county using your own mode of transport.

About you

Essential:

  • Able to work flexible hours including early starts.
  • Evidence of previous experience of working with young people with SEND including monitoring and development.
  • Flexible approach to working and problem solving.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to keep up-to-date and accurate records.
  • Experience of planning and managing a case load.
  • Experience of delivering presentations and learning resources to groups of young people.
  • Ability to work on an individual basis using own initiative.
  • Evidence of previous experience in maintaining health and safety standard and safeguarding whilst working with people in the community.
  • Driving Licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable:

  • Teaching experience.
  • Evidence of previous experience in maintaining health and safety standard and safeguarding whilst working with people in the community.
  • Evidence of previous experience of working with young people with SEND including monitoring and development.
