Job Title: Recycling Centre - Site Manager Waterdale
Starting Salary: £29,943 progressing to £33,542 per annum (pro rata for part time) - Pay award pending
Hours: 40
Location: Waterdale
Contract Type: Permanent
Directorate: Growth & Environment

Hertfordshire County Council is committed to protecting and enhancing our environment for both current and future generations. Our Recycling Centres play a vital role in helping residents reduce waste, increase recycling rates and dispose of materials safely and responsibly.

We are now looking to appoint a motivated and experienced Site Manager to lead the safe, efficient and customer‑focused operation of one of our busy sites.

About the role

As Site Manager, you will be responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the site, ensuring it operates safely, compliantly and to a high standard of customer service. You will lead and motivate a team of operatives, contractors and agency staff, ensuring performance targets are met while maintaining excellent environmental and safety standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing all aspects of site operations, including waste segregation, recycling performance and site presentation
  • Leading, supervising and developing site staff, including rota management, absence management and performance support
  • Ensuring compliance with health & safety legislation, environmental permits and Council policies
  • Delivering excellent customer service and dealing professionally with enquiries, complaints and incidents
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and stakeholders to support service objectives

This is a hands‑on role involving both operational and managerial responsibilities in a dynamic, customer‑facing environment.

About you

We are looking for a confident and organised manager with a strong commitment to health & safety, environmental performance and customer service.

You will have:

  • Experience of managing staff in an operational, industrial or site‑based environment
  • A good understanding of health & safety requirements and the ability to apply them in practice
  • Strong leadership, communication and problem‑solving skills
  • Experience of dealing with customers and managing challenging situations professionally
  • The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and undertake physical activity where required

Experience within waste management, environmental services or recycling operations is desirable, but not essential — full training will be provided.

You must be flexible, as the role includes weekend working and bank holiday cover as part of a rota.

We welcome applications from candidates who currently reside in the UK with established proof of right to work documentation. We are not able to offer sponsorship at this time for this role.
