Sefton Metropolitan Council is seeking to appoint a part time 3 days per week Area Coroner. This is a new post.
 About the post: The Area Coroner will work closely with the Senior Coroner to provide judicial leadership to the coroner team as well as conducting their own coroner investigations and inquests. The area coroner is the nominated deputy for the Senior Coroner when the Senior Coroner is absent. The Area Coroner will be expected to be available out of hours on a rota based system.  Sefton Metropolitan Council is looking for an exceptional candidate with excellent proven organisational, management and efficiency skills, as well as experience of exercising sound judgement and communicating effectively. In this role, you will work closely with the Senior Coroner and local authority manager to ensure value for money, performance and financial efficiencies. Collaborative working with the Senior Coroner, local authority, the police and other stakeholders is essential.
 You will be required to demonstrate knowledge and experience of coronial law and of basic medicine have proven skills in conducting investigations and an understanding of court procedure. You will also need to demonstrate the excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with sensitive situations.
 It is desirable that the successful candidate has proven experience of running or sharing running a coroner’s jurisdiction including carrying out investigations, case management, and conducting inquests.
 Who can apply: The successful candidate will be a barrister or a solicitor or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and satisfy the judicial-appointment eligibility condition which means they will have five years of experience whilst holding that qualification. They will be under the age of 75, have experience of working as an assistant coroner or area coroner and be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (s.23 and Schedule 3).
 Statutory Terms of the Appointment: Once a Coroner is appointed they are then a Judicial Office holder until they reach the age of 75 years (compulsory retirement age) unless they choose to resign or are removed by the Lord Chief Justice or Lord Chancellor prior to their 75th birthday.

What is the job role?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented advocate within the Advocacy team. We are looking for an enthusiastic and able lawyer to join our service and to represent the Council as our in-house advocate.
As a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive, you will require experience to handle Local Authority Children and Adoption cases in all tiers of court. There will also be the opportunity to carry out hearings in the Court of Protection, Education Tribunals, and Inquests, as well as in Adult Matters with relevant support and training.
You must be self-motivated and able to provide a high-quality, client-focused legal service, as well as to work effectively as part of a team and establish good relations with client departments and outside agencies.

* Identify where exemptions may apply, prepare refusal notice following ICO guidelines and where necessary obtain advice or approval from the Legal Services team&nbsp;&nbsp;
* Maintain web pages relevant to Information Rights.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
* Prepare regular reports of requests for information/performance figures&nbsp;

Over the last nine years, the Council has acquired a commercial property investment portfolio of significant financial and community value in order to increase income to help maintain services and to further its regeneration plans for the borough. The Council owns a range of properties including a shopping centre, various industrial estates, business parks and office buildings as well as its operational buildings and other land.
The work will involve a wide range of non-contentious matters, focusing on landlord and tenant work relating to the retail property portfolio, but will also include advising on other types of commercial property matters, proposed development sites and other Council matters as appropriate.
The Council is looking for a candidate who can progress property transactions, working collaboratively with the Council’s property team and with minimal supervision and has the confidence to tackle a variety of other matters. It will be a one-year fixed term contract.  The work will focus on disrepair, Awaab’s Law and related legislation to disrepair matters. You will be responsible for a challenging and complex caseload; you will be line managed by Senior Lawyers and supported by legal officers and paralegals in the team. &nbsp;The ideal candidate will be a qualified solicitor, or barrister with three years post qualification experience, able to demonstrate experience in managing disrepair litigation. An excellent opportunity has arisen within the London Borough of Redbridge for a highly experienced, Principal Lawyer Litigation to join the Council to provide a comprehensive and professional legal service.
You will report to the Chief Legal Officer within the Legal Department. You will also work closely with other Council departmental clients and specialist departments.
Responsibilities -
<ul>
<li>You will manage the Litigation Team</li>
<li>Provide expertise and knowledge of, and provide advice and guidance and practical assistance on, local government law in the areas of civil and criminal litigation, regulatory matters, housing law, corporate governance, including representation at courts or tribunals.</li>
<li>Conduct of the Council’s legal caseload in respect of general civil litigation/criminal litigation, and related project matters, including the negotiation and drafting of settlement terms and consent orders, the conduct of appeals and inquiries, and handling enforcement cases in the Magistrates’, Crown, County and High Courts.</li>
<li>Utilising skills and experience gained within a similar position.</li>
<li>To be responsible for the provision of advocacy services at public inquiries, before tribunals, and in the civil courts in civil proceedings in relation to the areas of specialism, such as Planning, Highways, Housing, Licensing, Land Tribunal matters, Contracts, Public Procurement and Regulatory Laws.</li>
</ul>
To be successful in this role you will need to:
<ul>
<li>Hold a Solicitor, Barrister, FILEX or similar legal qualification and authorised to conduct legal work.</li>
<li>Have experience of conducting civil/criminal litigation, housing and regulatory laws.</li>
<li>Advocacy experience in civil/criminal litigation, dealing with Planning, Property, Housing, Contracts, Regulatory matters.</li>
<li>Experience of advising in local government or similar environment.</li>
<li>Ability to manage a team of lawyers.</li>

As Planning Lawyer, you will join a friendly and supportive team and advise on all aspects of planning law and policy. You will have conduct of your own caseload and deal with varied and stimulating work on the cutting edge of planning law.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Provide legal advice and guidance on planning law, policy, and procedures
- Draft, review, and negotiate planning agreements, including section 106 agreements
- Ensure the proper conduct of planning inquiries, including the provision of advocacy at public hearings
- Represent the council in planning committees on a rota basis. The planning committee occur in the evening
- Provide advice and assistance to other members of the legal team in respect of planning law matters.
This is a permanent, part time role, 29.5 hours per week.
