The London Assembly scrutinises the Mayor's activities by questioning the Mayor about their decisions. The Assembly also investigates issues of importance to London.
There are 25 Assembly Members, elected every four years at the same time as the Mayor. The Secretariat works for the Assembly to support its activities. The&nbsp;Communications Team support service to promote the work of the Assembly through press office, social media, publicity and events.
The London Assembly Labour Group support the work of the 11 Labour Assembly Members in representing their constituents, scrutinising the work of the Mayor and championing the needs of Londoners.
We achieve this by delivering three main functions:

<li>Dedicated Research and Support Officers act as stakeholder engagement specialists for the Labour Group, dealing with casework, diary management and events.</li>
<li>Senior Researchers provide policy support for the Labour Group across areas such as economy, environment, fire, health, housing policing, transport etc.</li>
<li>Press Officers promote the work of the Labour Assembly Members through writing local and regional press releases, helping prepare our politicians for TV/ radio interviews and creating social media content.</li>

<h2>About the role</h2>
In this role you will work as a part of our Press Office, working with our Group Manager and the Leader of the Labour Group to lead our media work. Task managing our Communications Officer and Digital Communications Officer, you’ll be in charge of media engagement to promote the work of the Assembly Members. That means strategising to consider our key messages, planning story ideas and overseeing the production of traditional and social media content.

<h2>What your day will look like</h2>
This is a busy role that is a combination of proactive work to generate exciting media stories and reactive work to respond to breaking news stories. Your day might look something like:
<ul>
<li>Leading a short catch-up meeting at the start of the day with the Communications Officer and Digital Communications Officer to go through the press grid and plan stories for the day ahead</li>
<li>Meeting with Assembly Members to discuss their upcoming press ideas and developing plans to deliver them</li>
<li>Editing local newspaper articles to ensure they are fit for purpose</li>
<li>Talking to journalists to pitch upcoming story ideas and responding to requests for interviews/quotes.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Skills, knowledge and experience</h2>
To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:
<ul>
<li>Demonstrable research skills, to enable quick and effective grasp of information from a range of sources on a wide range of policy topics, and proven experience of policy briefing in a political/ public sector organisation</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Demonstrable verbal and written communication skills, including experience of writing a range of different styles of document for different audiences, often within very short timescales; experience of producing information specifically for media work and/or briefings for media interviews; the ability to use a range of software and media.</li>

<li>Experience of working directly with influential, high profile people in a pressured environment and in dealing with confidential/sensitive issues and documents; the ability to work in a politically complex organisation and apply political awareness.</li>

Communications and Engagement Lead (Public Health)

We are looking to recruit to a new and exciting role in our Communications and Marketing department. The Digital Communications and Engagement Officer will be responsible for managing and developing Medway Council’s social media channels and digital platforms, this includes editorial oversight of other service managed social media and digital channels.The Digital Communications and Engagement Officer will provide strategic input by planning and implementing digital communications and engagement strategies, using a variety of methods and channels to reach a wide range of audiences, to promote the council’s vision and priorities as well as support the department’s proactive and reactive communications. The successful candidate will have excellent writing skills across a variety of formats, with the ability to produce engaging copy across multiple channels, including eNewsletters and other email-marketing activities. This is a creative role which involves producing videos and carrying out video interviews with senior members of staff. The Digital Communications and Engagement Officer will be confident to research topics (sometimes complex), write scripts and film senior members of staff, as well as edit and publish video footage across multiple channels and platforms. They will be responsible for training colleagues on best practice in using a variety of social media channels and digital platforms, as well as staying up-to-date on industry best practice and making recommendations through trend awareness. They will maintain professional standards by keeping abreast of best practice in digital communications and engagement, as well as issues affecting local government. They will fully comply with legislation, including GDPR, when publishing content across all channels. The Digital Communications and Engagement Officer will work closely with the Press Office, which is responsible for managing the council’s reputation and promoting the council’s vision and priorities. They will provide a social media listening role and be able to respond to residents’ concerns and queries online, ensuring as far as possible that misinformation is corrected and effective signposting to correct information is provided, as well as reporting and advising senior colleagues on emerging topics and issues arising.This role will support the Press Office during an emergency incident or crisis, with the ability of working independently, under pressure and to tight deadlines. They will be part of the Communications and Marketing team’s out of hours emergency communications rota, as well as a rota to attend evening meetings, such as Full Council and Cabinet, to cover social media on corporate decision making. We are seeking a Digital Communications &amp; Engagement Officer to join the team at level A. This is the entry point of the role, so you will need to be able to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, experience and skills to get you started, but you will be supported to develop in your role through induction, probation and a supportive Performance Appraisal and Career Conversation. All elements of level A listed within the person specification are essential.
