Impact North West Schools is a registered Independent special school working with young people aged 11 - 16, who need support to transition back into their mainstream or specialist setting. We offer a variety of programmes depending on the needs of the young person and some, where it is in the child’s best interest, stay with INWS until Year 11. Our dedicated team of staff, work collaboratively to ensure successful outcomes for all our pupils.
Main purpose of Job
We are looking to appoint a Head of PE who will have a significant impact on the learning of pupils with additional needs. The role will involve leading a team of staff, planning and delivering a variety of high quality lessons across Key Stage 3 and 4, to include GCSE and vocational qualifications.
The successful candidate will work in a secure and supportive environment that helps pupils with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties overcome their challenges.
The position requires a candidate who can build relationships with children with SEMH difficulties and work in collaboration with colleagues to create an inclusive and supportive environment that is conducive to learning.
Duties and responsibilities
Design and implement a PE curriculum that promotes academic progress for all students
Ensure the PE curriculum is well-planned, sequenced, and relevant to the needs of Impact North West Schools students
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the PE curriculum, making adjustments as necessary to improve student outcomes
Ensure high quality teaching and subject knowledge of all staff in the PE department and provide training and coaching so all staff become experts.
Monitor and assess student progress in PE, using data to inform teaching strategies and interventions
Quality assure data within the subject to ensure it is accurate, reliable and valid.
Identify where pupils have learning gaps or are not making the expected progress, and make sure interventions target these.
Monitor the quality of teaching and learning across the subject, including book scrutinies, teacher planning scrutinies, lesson observations and learning walks.
Establish positive working relationships among colleagues, modelling effective team working and support.
Appraise colleagues and help them develop professionally following the school policy.
Audit, check and manage PE resources termly, to ensure they are available, up to date, varied and diverse, and match pupil and curriculum needs.
Foster a safe, inclusive, and positive classroom environment, using trauma-informed and attachment-aware approaches
Set goals that stretch and challenge pupils of all backgrounds and abilities.
Work collaboratively with pastoral teams to address barriers to learning and promote emotional resilience
Organise enrichment activities to inspire students and foster a love of learning
Provide leadership and guidance to the PE department, ensuring a cohesive and effective approach to teaching and learning
Requirements
UK QTS or equivalent.
Strong subject knowledge and understanding of the PE curriculum, including current best practices and research.
An ability to be flexible in the subjects that are taught.
Excellent teaching and assessment skills, with the ability to adapt to the needs of SEMH students
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and families
Data analysis and interpretation skills, to use assessment information to inform teaching and learning
Commitment to continuous professional development and a willingness to share best practises with colleagues
Ability to foster a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment, using trauma-informed and attachment-aware approaches
Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks effectively

Shortlisting

Interview
Shortlisted candidates will take part in an in-depth interview and selection process.
Candidates will be asked to address any discrepancies, anomalies or gaps in employment in their application form and this includes their employment history.
Candidates at the end of their interview will be reminded of their responsibility to disclose criminal convictions that are subject to DBS check if they have not already done so on the application.

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS) will be required for all appointed posts.

Proof of right to work in the UK must also be provided.
Probation
All new staff will be subject to the INWS probation procedure for a period of six months.
The probation period is to enable the assessment of an employee’s suitability for the job for which they have been employed which includes the monitor and review of the performance of new staff in relation to duties, skills, qualifications and experience outlined in the job description and person specification.
This will also include an employee’s suitability to work with children and young people and their commitment to safeguarding and child protection.
