About the Role

Tower Hamlets is looking for a committed and motivated Transport Co-ordinator to join Waste Services to support operational staff with the day to day running and management of the waste operational services fleet, ensuring compliance with the Council’s Operators Licence conditions. This is a ‘hands-on’ operational role in the heart of the service offering you the chance to shape the future of our fleet operations. You will have a direct impact on service quality and be involved in coordinating the introduction of innovative new vehicles such as forthcoming underground refuse storage collection vehicles, mechanical sweepers, scheduling the maintenance and repairs, monitoring safety standards, and keeping meticulous records for every vehicle’s condition, history, and use. You will work closely with the Council’s corporate fleet management team and support the Fleet Compliance Officer to provide in-service expertise and insight, ensuring the availability, safe and efficient use of the Waste Services’ fleet to deliver an excellent service throughout the borough.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with service managers deliver a planned approach to the removal of operational vehicles from front line duties for servicing, inspection or repair.
  • Ensure the allocation of fleet vehicles is managed to balance usage of vehicles and address excessive use issues.
  • Carryout regular inspections of vehicles to identify vehicle damage and ensure regular meetings take place with service managers to discuss vehicle maintenance issues and any driver related issues.
  • Undertake in cab and classroom training of drivers at all levels from non LGV up to LGV including on specialist equipment and undertaking driver assessments to ensure safe standards of driving.
  • Investigating accidents and dangerous occurrences.
  • Check and review vehicle related safety systems and supporting equipment such as on-board cameras, vehicle tracking and data recording.
  • Conduct random checks and regularly audit transport records.
  • Maintain a vehicle washing programme.
  • Oversee vehicle preparation for winter maintenance use.
  • Manage a waste operations parking system for fleet vehicles parking and drivers parking of personal vehicles.
