Hours: 35 hours per week

The City of Edinburgh Council's Sensory and Complex Needs Service is committed to providing high-quality inclusive educational experiences and improved outcomes for children and young people who are deaf, partially sighted/blind or are unable/require additional support to attend school due to ill health.

A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced teacher to undertake an exciting and varied promoted role. This additional full-time Team Leader will job share the Deaf Support Team Leader role, undertaking a line management role for designated staff within the growing team of teachers and support staff.

The Deaf Support Team is a citywide peripatetic team working with families at home, with staff and deaf children in early years establishments, mainstream and special schools. They provide knowledge and expertise with regards to the impact of deafness on development and access to learning. They assess, plan and implement supports at universal, targeted and intensive levels in collaboration with the team around the child. This includes providing Deaf Awareness training and signposting appropriate resources, contributing to individual education planning as well as direct teaching/support to develop the skills and confidence to overcome barriers to learning. They work collaboratively with NHS and third sector partners.

In addition to the shared tasks pertaining to the Deaf Support Team, the post holder will support the service manager with wider accessibility, health, and wellbeing priorities. This will include contributing to the development and implementation of procedures with regards to healthcare planning and adaptations and assisting in the development and coordination of the professional learning offer the service provides to education staff.

While the special requirements of this post stated in the job profile indicate experience and additional qualifications are required for the Deaf Support Team Leader role, we would also welcome applications from experienced teachers with evidence of a commitment to inclusive practice and supporting additional support needs who meet the essential criteria in the employee specification. Opportunities for professional development in the specialist area of deaf education will be provided.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently underrepresented.
