About the job

Salary: £30,024 - £32,597 a year plus £963 essential car user allowance (subject to criteria)
Hours per week: 37
Contract type: Permanent

This role sits at the heart of keeping our borough moving safely and efficiently. You’ll spend time out on site across the highway network, carrying out inspections, supervising works and making sure everything complies with legislation and agreed standards. You’ll also work from the office, dealing with enquiries, reviewing information, and producing clear, factual reports and correspondence.

You’ll be involved in street works and permitting activity, working closely with contractors, utility companies, colleagues across the council and members of the public. A big part of the role is investigating situations, establishing the facts, analysing information and using your judgement to resolve issues in a fair and professional way.

Organisation is key, as you’ll be managing your own workload to meet targets and deadlines while responding to issues as they arise. You’ll need to be comfortable using IT systems such as Word and Excel, communicating clearly with a wide range of people, and building positive working relationships to gain cooperation and commitment.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About you

You’ll bring demonstrable experience of supervising sites within a highway environment, along with office-based experience in a customer or public service setting. Some experience of working within a street permitting or street works environment would be ideal.

You’re confident investigating issues, gathering and analysing information, and presenting your findings clearly in written reports and letters. You’re well organised, comfortable juggling competing demands, and able to work to deadlines without losing attention to detail.

Strong communication skills are essential. You’ll be able to consult, negotiate and work collaboratively with people both inside and outside the council, always acting professionally and with respect. You’ll also have a good understanding of equality issues and the impact discrimination can have on service delivery and the people we work with.

If you like a role that combines site work, problem-solving, collaboration and making a real difference to the local environment, this could be a great fit for you.

This is a public facing role so you’ll need to show off your fluency in speaking and writing English
