Contribute to a Cleaner, Greener Erewash!

Do you take pride in your hometown and want to make a real, visible impact every single day? Do you have a wide range of knowledge including removal of fly tipping, fly posting, asbestos, sharps and waste management? Can you operate machinery, and work on your own initiative and within a team? Join us as a Street Cleansing Operative and become a local hero - keeping Ilkeston, Long Eaton, and surrounding communities looking their best.

Your Day-to-Day Impact: From sweeping bustling high streets to tidying quiet residential roads, you’ll be the reason our borough stays clean, safe, and welcoming. You’ll empty over 1,100 litter bins, respond to graffiti and fly-tipping reports, and clear leaves, debris, and refuse - making public spaces shine.

Tools of the Trade: You’ll operate specialist cleansing vehicles and equipment with skill and care, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely. Working with your team leader, you’ll help maintain high standards across the borough.

A Friendly Face on the Front Line: You’ll meet residents, businesses, and visitors daily - offering polite, prompt service and responding to street cleaning concerns with professionalism and pride. You’re not just cleaning - you’re representing Erewash Borough Council.

All-Weather Champion: Rain or shine, snow or storm - you’ll be out there making a difference. There will be times when seasonal or emergency work is needed, such as intense leaf falls, snow, storm damage or extra cleans after events, which may include working weekends, bank holidays or outside usual hours. Whether it’s a post-event clean-up, emergency response, or seasonal blitz, you’ll be ready to roll!

Why It Matters: In performing this role, you will contribute directly to Erewash Borough Council’s goal of creating vibrant, sustainable communities, protecting the public realm and ensuring high standards in the appearance of our towns and neighbourhoods. Every clean street, every cleared path, every bin emptied - it all adds up to a borough we can be proud of.

Benefits of Working for Us: In addition to a competitive salary, you will also have access to:

  • Generous annual leave package – 29 days annual leave (rising to 33 days after 5 years’ continuous service) plus 8 bank holidays a year
  • Free workplace car parking within the Borough
  • Opportunities for training, learning and continuous professional development
  • Family friendly flexible working policies available
  • Option to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) plus access to a salary sacrifice scheme for added voluntary pension contributions
  • Discounted leisure membership with the Fit for Work scheme
  • Access to the VIVUP employee benefits discount and salary sacrifice scheme
