About Camden
Camden is building somewhere everyone can thrive. We’re making our borough the best place to live, work, study and visit while delivering ambitious change so that nobody gets left behind.
Within our Highways Engineering Service, you’ll have the opportunity to shape Camden’s streets and public spaces, helping us create safer, healthier, more accessible and sustainable places for everyone.
The role
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Design Engineer to play a key role in the design and delivery of Camden’s highway, traffic and public realm schemes.
You’ll lead and contribute to a broad range of projects, from parking and traffic management changes through to complex junction designs, active travel schemes, cycle corridors and major public realm improvements. Your work will directly support Camden’s Transport Strategy, including our ambitions to promote walking and cycling, improve road safety and air quality, and support sustainable economic growth.
Taking schemes from feasibility through to detailed design, you’ll produce and review construction drawings, geometric and drainage designs, Bills of Quantities, cost estimates, audit documentation and contract documents. You’ll ensure designs meet relevant legislation and technical standards while challenging proposals to identify safer, more sustainable, user-friendly and cost-effective solutions.
You’ll work closely with colleagues across the Council as well as TfL, developers, emergency services, elected Members, consultants, vulnerable user groups and the public. You may also manage external consultants, provide technical advice and support negotiations relating to development proposals.
Experience of Section 106 and developer-funded highway schemes would be particularly valuable, including reviewing designs associated with planning applications, negotiating with developers and consultants, coordinating approvals and helping ensure schemes meet Camden’s transport and public realm objectives.
As a senior member of the team, you’ll also share your expertise, promote best practice and innovation, mentor junior colleagues and support apprentices and placements.
About you
You’ll be an experienced engineering professional with an Engineering degree or equivalent and relevant post-qualification experience, or Chartered/Incorporated status with a recognised professional institution and demonstrable relevant experience.
You’ll have a strong understanding of highway design within an urban environment and experience delivering large, complex or high-value schemes. You’ll be confident managing budgets and programmes, commissioning and managing consultants, coordinating multiple providers and working within relevant contract and financial management procedures.
You’ll also bring experience of partnership working and public consultation, alongside the confidence to work with developers, elected Members, public authorities and communities on potentially complex or contentious projects.
Crucially, you’ll be proficient in AutoCAD, with the ability to produce and review complex highway designs to a high standard. You’ll combine strong technical judgement with excellent communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
