As a School Crossing Patrol for Luton Council, you will play a vital role in helping children and other pedestrians cross the road safely at a designated crossing point. You will operate the crossing throughout the full period of duty, and where required, accommodate any reasonable adjustments to working times to meet service needs.

You will carry out your duties in accordance with established procedures, ensuring the safety of pedestrians at all times. This includes taking appropriate action during poor weather conditions, traffic incidents, accidents, or any other emergency situations that may arise at the site.

You will liaise with nearby schools and relevant authorities to respond to variations in school hours or changes to crossing times, ensuring the service continues to operate safely and effectively. You will also be responsible for promptly informing management of any changes to crossing times, unsafe conditions at the site, or any matters that may present a risk to pedestrians.

The role involves monitoring driver behaviour and reporting incidents where vehicles fail to stop, ensuring that concerns are raised with management as soon as possible and close to the time of the incident. Where necessary, you will liaise with management and the local Police to support incident reporting and promote road safety.

This role is essential in supporting community safety and helping children and pedestrians travel safely to and from school.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About you

You will have strong communication skills and be able to deal effectively and confidently with a wide range of people, particularly children and adults of different ages. You will be approachable, calm and courteous, helping to create a safe and reassuring environment for all crossing users.

You will be able to use your own initiative and work independently, while also understanding the importance of working as part of a wider team. You will be reliable and capable of following strict procedures and working to set times without the need for constant supervision.

An awareness of health and safety is essential. You will be able to recognise potential dangers and hazards associated with the role and take appropriate action to reduce risks and ensure the safety of all pedestrians using the crossing.

You will also have an understanding of equality and inclusion, including the ability to recognise some common forms of discrimination, and will treat all crossing users fairly, respectfully and without bias.

Application Process

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.

On occasions, we may close a vacancy early due to a very high number of applications being received.
