School Business Manager
St Peter & St Paul CE Primary is seeking a capable, thoughtful and proactive School Business Manager to help our school make the best possible use of its people, resources and opportunities.
This is a broad and influential role. You will work closely with the Headteacher and governors, helping to shape the school’s financial strategy while ensuring that the systems, staff and facilities supporting our children and community are managed effectively.
About our school
We are a Church of England primary school with 315 children. Our Christian ethos is at the heart of school life, and we warmly welcome people of all faiths and none.
Our values—Courage, Respect, Forgiveness, Kindness, Hope and Fairness—guide our relationships and decisions. We celebrate joys, challenges and successes in partnership with families and the wider community, and want every member of our school to have the opportunity to shine.
About the role
As Business Manager, you will provide clear, reliable business and financial management to the Headteacher, senior leaders and governors. You will help the school plan confidently for the future while ensuring that day-to-day operations run smoothly.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Preparing, monitoring and reporting on the school budget, and contributing to longer-term financial planning.
• Ensuring financial transactions, purchasing and expenditure are properly authorised, recorded and compliant with requirements.
• Advising leaders and governors on financial options, risks and the effective use of resources.
• Supporting audits and completing financial returns for relevant bodies.
• Managing administration connected with invoices, orders, payments, income and outstanding debts.
• Overseeing premises, contracts, lettings, insurance and arrangements with external suppliers.
• Supporting personnel administration, including staff records, payroll information, recruitment processes and routine staff queries.
• Supervising administrative staff, lunchtime assistants and premises staff; supporting their development and coordinating work across the team.
• Maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive financial and personnel information with care.
You will also help ensure that school resources are aligned with its priorities, so that effective business management contributes to the best possible experience and outcomes for children.
About you
You will bring sound financial judgement, accuracy and a strong understanding of how effective business management supports a school. You will be confident working with budgets and complex information, and able to present it clearly to people with different levels of financial expertise.
Just as importantly, you will be approachable, organised and solutions-focused. You will be comfortable working with a range of colleagues, families, governors, suppliers and external partners; able to manage competing deadlines; and committed to handling confidential matters sensitively.
You will be a supportive manager who values the contribution of others and can help staff grow in confidence and skill. You will also share our inclusive ethos and be motivated by the opportunity to help a school community flourish.
What the role offers
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the strategic direction and daily life of a welcoming school. You will work in close partnership with the Headteacher and governors, have scope to develop effective systems and practises, and help ensure that our resources support the school’s ambitions.
