About the team

This is an exciting opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of all of Hertfordshire’s residents and join the Waste Management Unit for Hertfordshire County Council. As the Waste Disposal Authority, we are responsible for waste management contracts and providing a network of Recycling Centres across the county.

With a particular focus on helping develop the Recycling Centre service into a nationally recognised example of excellence, we are recruiting for a permanent Technical Assistant to support our growing team.

Reporting to the Technical Manager in the Recycling Centre Team you will work alongside colleagues at all levels delivering a complex statutory service.

About the role

This job is varied with tasks generated from various sources including service users, colleagues, and other stakeholders. The service is politically high profile and high value. Accordingly, we would be looking for someone to undertake duties to a high standard.

You’ll get involved with supporting all aspects of the Recycling Centre Service including overseeing enquires; complaints and compliments coming into our central ‘WasteAware’ email box; raising works orders and paying invoices and managing stock and distribution of equipment PPE and other consumables. The role involves some travel around the county to Recycling Centres; therefore, the successful applicant must have access to a car with suitable business use insurance.

We are looking for someone to assist colleagues with technical advice in relation to the use of HCC mobile phones; administration of software including the Van Permit Scheme; weighbridge operation and ability to download and securely share CCTV/ BWVC footage to assist with various types of investigations.

This role will be an ideal steppingstone for someone wanting to pursue a career in Waste Management. You’ll be joining a supportive and knowledgeable team committed to delivering a high-quality service to the public.

About you

With well-developed organisational, prioritising and time management skills, you will need to be confident using Microsoft Office, with the ability to quickly learn new software systems and council processes. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential as you will often be the first point of contact for service users.

The successful candidate will bring a positive, solution-focused attitude and be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Experience in handling data, working with stakeholders, or supporting compliance in health and safety would be an advantage.

The Recycling Centre team frequently work from an office located on the Ware Recycling Centre so the ability to travel to different work locations from time to time is required.

We welcome applications from candidates who currently reside in the UK with established proof of right to work documentation. We are not able to offer sponsorship at this time for this role.
