Library and Community Access Worker (Casual)

£13.70 - £13.92 per hour
Job Introduction

Working Hours: Casual ad hoc hours

Interview Date: 12th November 2026

Are you looking for a flexible role where you can make a difference in your local library?

Living Well Libraries are looking for friendly, enthusiastic people who enjoy working with communities and have a passion for libraries. As a Library and Community Access Worker (Casual), you’ll help deliver library services across our four Rutland Living Well Libraries — supporting customers, answering enquiries, providing information and signposting, helping with day-to-day tasks, and getting involved in activities and events.

This is a casual, flexible role, with work offered as needed to cover holidays, sickness and other service requirements. There are no guaranteed hours, so we are looking for people who enjoy flexible working, can adapt to different library settings and are able to travel between our four library sites.

About the Role:

As a Library and Community Access Worker (Casual), you will:

  • Welcome and support customers, helping with library, IT, reading, learning and membership enquiries, and signposting to relevant services.
  • Support the day-to-day running of our libraries, including shelving, handling and repairing stock, deliveries, records and basic building duties.
  • Help create welcoming and engaging library spaces, supporting displays, activities and events for our communities.
  • Use our library management system to record and retrieve information (full training will be provided).

Additional Requirements:

The successful candidate will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Costs for the DBS are covered by Rutland County Council.

Please note that you will need a full driving licence to enable you to travel across the county.

About You:

We’re looking for a people-focused, flexible and approachable person who enjoys helping others and being part of a busy library team. You’ll be confident working independently as well as alongside colleagues, happy to adapt to different situations and library environments and willing to be flexible to meet the needs of the service.

To succeed in this role, you will be:

  • Positive, friendly and can-do, with a genuine interest in libraries, reading and supporting your community.
  • Educated to GCSE level in English and Maths.
  • Have experience in libraries, information, customer service or a similar community-focused environment.
  • Confident using IT and everyday digital tools, including Windows, Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to work across our four library sites and respond to the needs of the service.

Informal enquiries

For an informal conversation about the role, please contact James Kearney, Library Team Leader at jkearney@rutland.gov.uk.

We review applications frequently; however, in periods of high demand, the role may close earlier than advertised, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

Our benefits:

  • Competitive salary
  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • A strong focus on health, wellbeing, and work-life balance
