As the only 11-16 all-boys academy in Sefton, Birkdale High School aims to be a beacon for outstanding practice in the education of boys and be the school of choice for families across the Southport community and beyond.

We are seeking a caring, dedicated and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant (Level 1) to join our SEND team and play a vital role in supporting students with special educational needs to achieve their full potential. The successful candidate will work closely with our SENDCO, teaching staff and wider support team to provide targeted support for individuals and small groups of pupils, helping them to access learning, develop confidence and succeed both academically and personally. This role involves supporting students with a range of special educational needs, including those with physical disabilities, whilst promoting independence, inclusion and positive engagement in school life.

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will build positive relationships with students, support them in lessons, help manage behaviour in line with school policies and contribute to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment. You will also assist teaching staff with classroom preparation, resources and pupil progress monitoring, whilst working collaboratively with colleagues, parents and external professionals where appropriate.

We passionately believe that a single-sex setting at this particular stage of a boy's education is the ideal environment for them to grow in confidence, close the attainment gap with girls and develop their love of learning. Our boys are able to mature at their own pace, supported and challenged by staff who are experts in teaching boys and surrounded by peers to whom they can closely relate.

Our vision is driven by the strong moral imperative that it is our mission to provide all our boys with a first-class education, outstanding outcomes and better life chances. We seek to challenge stereotypes, we are ambitious for every boy we teach and we want to see a society that benefits from the contributions of our well-educated, well-rounded and empowered young men.

We believe that every child, regardless of their background, should be able to fulfil their academic potential and go on to thrive amongst the demands and expectations of life in modern Britain and beyond. The school's motto is "Aspire - Thrive - Succeed" and underpins its ethos and approach.

We aim to engage, support, stretch and challenge all boys by providing them with a range of exciting opportunities, a varied and purposeful curriculum and a strong set of core values, demanding of all

students the highest standards whilst supporting them in the fulfilment of their personal and academic potential.

We are proud of our academic achievements and examination success, made possible by our talented and dedicated staff who work tirelessly to engage and challenge every student. We also have a sporting record that is second to none amongst local schools, regularly enjoying success at local, regional and national level.

We strive to be an inclusive school and an outward-facing centre of academic, professional and personal achievement, prepared to lead, learn from and collaborate with partners in pursuit of excellence for our pupils and staff.

You would be joining the Southport Learning Trust, a family of schools comprising six secondary schools, two primary schools and one special school. Being part of our Trust provides excellent opportunities for collaboration, professional development and the sharing of best practice across multiple settings. Staff also benefit from a strong commitment to wellbeing, access to an excellent Employee Assistance Programme and a supportive professional network.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience of, or an interest in, supporting young people with additional needs.
  • Is patient, empathetic and committed to helping students overcome barriers to learning.
  • Can work effectively as part of a team and build positive relationships with students, staff and families.
  • Shares our commitment to inclusion, safeguarding and high expectations for all learners.
  • Is keen to contribute to the wider life of the school community.

Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to visit us, meet our team and, most importantly, get to know our incredible students. To arrange a visit ahead of application, please contact Jade Hooper via jhooper@birkdalehigh.co.uk.

We look forward to welcoming applications from candidates who share our ambition to help every student aspire, thrive and succeed.

We are really looking forward to meeting you.
