Location: Hybrid working, expectation of 2 days a week in office to work alongside service and project teams.

About the Role

We are looking for an analytical and curious professional to join our Insight & Improvement team, helping to shape services for children, young people and families through high quality data analysis and insight.

Working across major programmes across children’s and education services, you will analyse complex datasets and create meaningful reporting products that support evidence-based decision-making. You will use a range of analytical tools and technologies, including the Microsoft data platform (SQL Server, SSMS), Power BI, Azure, Fabric and Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of other data visualisation and business intelligence tools would also be advantageous.

You will work closely with programme teams, operational services and senior leaders to transform data into insight, identifying trends, understanding demand, measuring outcomes and highlighting opportunities for improvement. Your analysis will directly inform strategic decision making, service redesign and the delivery of key priorities across Children and Education.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys combining technical skills with stakeholder engagement and is passionate about using data to improve public services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain dashboards, reports and performance monitoring products to support strategic and operational decision making.
  • Work with services and programme teams to understand requirements and develop effective analytical solutions.
  • Develop performance indicators, outcome measures and benefits realisation reporting.
  • Analyse data and develop insight to identify trends, risks, opportunities and areas for service improvement.
  • Contribute to statutory and non-statutory returns to external agencies, ensuring data quality and compliance.
  • Investigate data quality issues and support improvements to data collection, recording and reporting processes.
  • Present analysis and findings through clear visualisations, reports and presentations.
  • Support programme evaluation, promote best practice in data management and collaborate with colleagues to develop analytical capability across the directorate.

What We’re Looking For

  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent experience in data analysis, business intelligence or performance reporting.
  • Experience of developing dashboards and reporting products using tools such as Power BI, Excel or equivalent visualisation software.
  • Experience of using SQL for data extraction, transformation or analysis.
  • Experience of analysing and interpreting complex datasets to support business decisions.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to identify trends, performance issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Experience of gathering business requirements and translating them into reporting or analytical solutions.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience of working with databases and large datasets.
  • Knowledge of data protection, GDPR and information governance principles.
  • Understanding of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in a work context.

Additional Information

  • No direct line management responsibility.
  • Role supports statutory returns and service improvement activity.
  • Key stakeholders include: Programme Managers, Project Managers, Service Managers, Heads of Service, Finance colleagues, Data & Insight colleagues, Policy and Strategy colleagues and operational teams across Children and Education.
  • This role offers the opportunity to work on high profile programmes that directly impact children, young people and families across Bristol.
