Independent member of the Audit and Standards Committee

Ref: IMA

Annual Allowance: £500 p.a. plus travel and subsistence expenses

Could you bring fresh thinking, sound judgement and an independent voice to local decision-making?

Broxbourne Council is looking for an Independent Member to join its Audit and Standards Committee, helping provide challenge and assurance on audit, risk, governance, reporting and standards.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone with a local connection and an interest in public service. You do not need to be a Councillor or Council employee — your independence is what matters.

You will gain valuable insight into how local government works, strengthen your skills in scrutiny, governance and decision-making and build experience that can enhance your CV and future employability.

Experience and Knowledge

We are looking for someone who is impartial, curious and confident asking thoughtful questions. Experience in audit, finance, governance or risk management would be helpful, but sound judgement and integrity are essential.

Commitment

The Committee meets around four times a year, usually in the evening, with time needed to read papers in advance.

Additional requirements

To protect the role’s independence, applicants must not be current Council members or officers or have held those roles in the previous five years. Applicants must also be free from conflicts of interest, relevant unspent convictions, bankruptcy restrictions and party-political connections.

Payment

The role receives a £500 annual allowance, plus reasonable travel and subsistence expenses.

Applications

The Council is committed to safer recruitment, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. It is expected that all staff and volunteers share this commitment.

To apply, please send a CV and/or covering letter to Sarah Marsh, Chief Internal Auditor, Borough of Broxbourne Council, Bishops' College, Churchgate, Cheshunt, EN8 9XQ.
