Ready to help shape the next chapter in Sandwell's transformation story?

Are you an experienced HR professional looking for an opportunity where you can genuinely make a difference?

This is an exciting time to join Sandwell Council. We are on an ambitious journey to become an Outstanding Council, and we're proud to have recently been recognised as the Most Improved Council of the Year. As we continue our transformation, we're looking for talented and credible HR professionals to help us build on that success and shape the workforce of the future.

We have two fixed-term HR Consultant opportunities available:

  • 12-month fixed-term contract (Maternity Cover)
  • 10-month fixed-term contract (Secondment Cover)

If you're passionate about supporting managers, navigating complex people challenges, influencing positive outcomes, and helping organisations evolve, we'd love to hear from you.

Why Join Us?

At Sandwell, HR is at the heart of our improvement journey. These roles offer the chance to work on a diverse and rewarding portfolio of work, combining complex employee relations casework with exciting organisational design and workforce change projects.

No two days are the same. One day you may be advising senior managers on a complex disciplinary or capability matter, and the next you'll be helping shape a new service structure, supporting a transformation programme, or contributing to strategic workforce solutions that directly impact services and communities.

You'll join a supportive and highly collaborative HR & OD team that values fresh thinking, professional challenge, and a shared commitment to delivering excellent outcomes.

About the Role

As an HR Consultant, you'll be a trusted adviser to managers across the Council, providing pragmatic, professional, and solution-focused HR support.

Working closely with HR Business Partners, managers, Trade Unions and stakeholders, you'll play a key role in helping services manage workforce challenges, deliver change, and create positive working environments where people can thrive.

About You

We're looking for experienced HR professionals who bring credibility, resilience and sound judgement.

You will thrive in this role if you:

  • Have substantial experience of providing professional HR advice within a complex organisation.
  • Are confident managing sensitive and complex employee relations casework.
  • Have experience supporting organisational change, restructures or workforce transformation initiatives.
  • Can build strong relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Are pragmatic, solutions focused and able to balance risk with business need.
  • Enjoy working at pace whilst maintaining high professional standards.
  • Are collaborative, adaptable and committed to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrate resilience, positivity and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Share our values of One Team, Customer Focused, Inclusive, Ambitious and Accountable.

Professional HR qualifications and public sector experience would be advantageous, although we are equally interested in candidates who can demonstrate the right skills, experience and impact.

Why Sandwell?

This is more than just an HR role.

It's an opportunity to be part of a council that is transforming at pace, challenging itself to do better, and investing in its people to achieve outstanding outcomes for residents, communities and colleagues.

If you're looking for a role where your expertise will be valued, your ideas welcomed, and your contribution genuinely felt, this could be the perfect next step for you.
