
Highway Inspector (Highway Operations)
We’re seeking a Highway Inspector working as a front-line officer across Medway to take positive action regarding infringements on the highway and carrying out inspections of Medway’s highway network and highway assets.
As a Highway Inspector, you will be working within the Highway Operations Team, conducting and monitoring the network condition, identifying any defects and taking appropriate action in rectifying defects, to meet our statutory duty under the Highways Act 1980.
The postholder will be required to have an awareness of Highway legislation and relevant Codes of Practice relating to Highway Maintenance and Design and an understanding of Construction, Design, Management (CDM) Regulations.
An understanding of the challenges to deliver maintenance activities that reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive contribution to our Climate Change commitments would be beneficial.
Whilst the post holder will not be required to line manage others, you may be required to direct, coordinate or train other employees and you will be required to liaise with all stakeholders both internal and external to the organisation.
The postholder will be expected to form part of the Highways Out of Hours Service, dealing with incidents that may arise after office hours and over the weekend. This will be on a rota basis alongside other Duty Engineers, of which renumeration is paid.

Career Progression Frameworks (CPF) have been introduced for all roles at Medway Council. There will be further opportunity once in post to progress from level A to B, and B to C.

Highways are seeking a Highways Inspector to join the team at level A. This is the entry point of the role, so you will need to be able to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, experience and skills to get you started, but you will be supported to develop in your role through induction, probation and a supportive Performance Appraisal and Career Conversation. All elements of level A listed within the person specification are essential. Through your induction you will be introduced to the Career Progression Framework (CPF), which will help you to identify your areas of strength and any development needs.
