This is your moment. Shape the Future. Feel Supported. Belong in Newcastle.
Newcastle is more than a workplace, it’s a community. A vibrant, multicultural city where creativity, kindness and resilience run deep. From the Quayside to Jesmond Dene, from Ouseburn’s independent cafés to our world-class universities, this is a city that welcomes you and your ideas with open arms.

About the Role
We are recruiting to the exciting role of MST-CAN Family Resource Worker to join our MST-CAN team within Newcastle’s Safeguarding Service.

This is an opportunity to be part of a specialist service working intensively with children and families where there are significant safeguarding concerns, helping families make meaningful and sustainable changes so that children can remain safely within their family wherever possible.

As a Family Resource Worker, you will work alongside MST-CAN Therapists and the wider team to support the development and delivery of systemic and behavioural interventions with families. You will have a practical, hands-on role, working directly with families in their homes and communities to help them overcome challenges, build on their strengths and achieve positive change.

The role is varied and will include supporting therapists with gathering information and safety assessments, helping families put agreed interventions into practice and supporting behaviourally based approaches including parent management strategies, cognitive behavioural approaches and crisis intervention.

You will also provide practical support to families around some of the wider issues that can affect their ability to make and sustain change. This could include helping families to address housing difficulties, finances and debt, benefits, substance misuse, education, employment and positive use of their time.

Building relationships is central to the role. You will work closely with families and alongside professionals across children's social care, schools, health, mental health services, adult services and other agencies to make sure support is coordinated around the needs of the child and family.

You will contribute to clinical supervision and treatment planning, maintain accurate records and, where required, help prepare information and reports for meetings, conferences and court.

Above all, we are looking for someone who can build positive relationships with families, work confidently as part of a multidisciplinary team and remain focused on improving outcomes for children. You will need to be able to balance practical support with professional curiosity, clear boundaries and a strong commitment to safeguarding.

Our Safeguarding Service
The ambition for Child Protection in Newcastle is for families to receive the right support at the right time, from the right people, to ensure children are kept safe. Child Protection is underpinned by relational practice between partner agencies and families.

In Newcastle, we have established a Safeguarding Delivery Service and a Multiagency Child Protection Team which provides a seamless service when children are at risk of, or have suffered, significant harm.

Within our Safeguarding Delivery Service and Multiagency Child Protection Team there is a range of skills and experience delivered by Social Workers and specialist practitioners, overseen by experienced Team Managers, with collaboration between partner agencies including Police, Health and Education.

Our aim is to provide a proportionate, coordinated and effective multi-agency response to harm, working alongside families to achieve safe and sustainable change.

Why Newcastle, Why Now
We’re not just a local authority. We’re a city with ambition, heart and a bold vision for children. At Children & Families Newcastle, we’re building something special: a service rooted in relationships, restorative practice and real impact.

We’ve been judged Good with Outstanding areas by Ofsted, and we’re not stopping there. We’re working towards becoming a UNICEF Child Friendly City and a Marmot City, tackling inequality and putting children at the centre of everything we do.

Families First: Transforming How We Support Children and Families
Families First is a whole-system shift designed to give children and families the right help at the right time and to make our practice more meaningful, relational and effective.
Through earlier intervention and prevention, our new Family Help teams step in at the right time when families need support, helping them work through the challenges they face. We’re breaking down traditional silos by bringing local authority services together with Police, Health and Education partners to create a single, seamless system of support.
Families are placed firmly in the lead through Family Led Decision Making, now embedded as standard practice, ensuring their voices shape the decisions that matter most.
We’re strengthening support networks so more children can remain safely at home, including increased support for kinship carers. Instead of “stop/start” involvement, families will experience consistent, long-term relationships with one Lead Practitioner walking alongside them throughout their journey.
And when significant harm is present, our multidisciplinary child protection arrangements provide the specialist and decisive intervention families need.

MST-CAN forms an important part of this approach.
Its intensive, whole-family way of working supports the Families First ambition of keeping children safe, strengthening families and addressing the difficulties that can contribute to harm. As a Family Resource Worker, you will contribute directly to that work by helping families turn plans and interventions into practical change in their everyday lives.
Families First is about doing what works, earlier, together and with families at the centre.
