The role.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Digital Content Editor to join our Digital Content Team. The team are responsible for keeping our website content up-to-date.

In this role, you will work with council services to keep website content up-to-date. You will also migrate content from existing microsites to the main website, help to build new microsites, and make documents accessible across the website portfolio. You will also work on specific projects to improve the customer experience and accessibility.

We are committed to making our digital assets accessible and usable for everyone. To achieve this level of compliance, we make sure the council’s corporate website and microsites meet the latest accessibility and usability standards.

Key responsibilities:

  • You should have previous experience of using a content management system (CMS) and an understanding of the accessibility issues surrounding PDFs would be useful. Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 would be desirable.
  • You must have experience of writing, editing and proof-reading text, ideally for publishing in the public domain. You must also have the confidence to liaise with departments across the council to capture and advise on web content.
  • You will be experienced working as part of a team to achieve a common goal, and also able to work on your own to achieve your own personal objectives.
  • You will have great attention to detail and be able to ensure tasks are completed on time and to the required standard

Work style.

At North Somerset Council, we offer a hybrid working environment based on four distinct work styles. Depending on the role and personal circumstances, you will fall into one of these categories. However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.

This role falls into the category of Mobile/Field Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:

  • 0-1 day in the office.
  • Includes field workers who primarily work remotely.
  • Comes into the office for meetings or focused work. Virtual connections with the team are essential, with portable technology supporting work on the go.

About you.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about website and digital services and who possesses the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria:

  • At least 5 GCSEs at the minimum accepted pass grade or above including maths and English to demonstrate numeracy and literacy standards.
  • Experience of writing, editing and proof-reading text for publishing in the public domain.
  • Ability to present information in a structured way appropriate to the needs of the user.
  • Demonstrable accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on your own initiative, receiving work through a workflow process.
  • Ability to work in a team to achieve a goal by the due date.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of information systems such as email, Word, Excel, Teams and ideally web content management systems.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including negotiating and problem-solving.
  • Ability to ensure tasks are completed on time and to the required standard.
  • Able to adapt quickly to using new software.
  • Experience of working with senior officers and able to develop and maintain positive working relationships.

Desirable criteria:

  • Web content writing and editing.
  • Awareness of policy and practical implications of usability and accessibility issues relating to digital services and communications.
  • Basic understanding of WCAG 2.2 accessibility legislation, usability and readability.
  • Experience of organising content into usable sections within an existing information architecture.
  • Experience of converting complex text into Plain English.
