
Despatch Driver
We are looking to recruit a reliable and flexible Despatch Driver to join our operational support service.
This varied role plays an important part in keeping council services running smoothly across the city, including schools and council buildings.
The role
You will be responsible for delivering and collecting school meals, internal and external mail, parcels and equipment to and from schools, civic offices and other council premises across Portsmouth. This includes working to agreed delivery schedules and ensuring quality and service standards are met.
The role also involves receiving, coordinating and storing major goods-in deliveries, operating the goods-inwards station, and assisting with the moving of furniture and equipment when required.You will undertake daily and weekly vehicle checks, operate a franking machine for outgoing mail, and support mail sorting and distribution.
As part of a small team, you will work on a rota that ensures you are familiar with all operational support functions.You will be expected to work flexibly, adapting to changing workloads and covering for colleagues, when necessary, while always following health and safety procedures.
The Ideal candidate
You will need to:
- Hold a full, current manual driving licence
- Have a good working knowledge of the Highway Code
- Be reliable, organised and able to work to delivery schedules
- Be physically able to carry out manual handling tasks
- Be flexible and willing to undertake a range of duties
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Have a strong health and safety awareness
Experience in a similar delivery, driving or operational support role would be an advantage, but is not essential.
