We’re looking for a friendly, reliable, and community-minded Community Support Worker/Driver to join our team and help deliver health improvement services across Hertfordshire via the Better Health Bus.
About the role
As a Community Support Worker/Driver for the Better Health Bus, you will be joining the successful and highly regarded Public Health and Community Protection Team at Hertfordshire County Council. You will be responsible for safely operating the Better Health Bus and supporting its mission to improve health and wellbeing and tackle health inequalities across Hertfordshire.
The Better Health Bus is a 3.5 tonne bespoke minivan with two clinic rooms, from which a variety of health and wellbeing services are delivered. Alongside driving the vehicle, you’ll be the welcoming face of the service, meeting and greeting members of the public, asking them about their health needs and signposting them to relevant local health and wellbeing services.
When the Better Health Bus is not scheduled to attend an event, you will support with restocking and refuelling the vehicle, and other ad hoc tasks to assist the Public Health team. You may also be required to attend other community events alongside colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive the Better Health Bus to and from scheduled locations across Hertfordshire (from its base in Welwyn Garden City)
- Complete daily and weekly vehicle checks
- Ensure the vehicle is maintained, clean, and roadworthy
- Drive the vehicle to both planned and unplanned maintenance appointments
- Support the team with set up and pack down for events (may involve manual handling tasks)
- Welcome and engage with members of the public visiting the bus
- Provide basic information and signposting to community services, health improvement programmes, and local support organisations
- Maintain accurate records of visits and interactions as required
About you
Essential:
- A valid UK manual Driving Licence (D1 category desirable)
- Confident, approachable, and able to communicate effectively
- Experience working/volunteering with the public or in a community-facing role
- Committed to promoting health equity and supporting underserved communities
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role (including crouching, bending and manual handling of equipment)
- Flexible and willing to work evening and weekends when required
Desirable:
- Experience driving larger vehicles
- Knowledge of local health and community support services

Driving required
You’ll need to have the ability to drive and/or travel around Hertfordshire, either using your own mode of transport or a company car to travel to other locations.
English Fluency
The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post (for those whose language is a signed language the provision of a sign language interpreter who speaks English to the necessary standard of fluency will be required).
