You will be reporting to the Head Teacher.

The purpose of this role is teaching assigned classes and associated duties. We are happy to talk flexible working where possible.

Sanday Community School is a small, friendly 3–16 island school with approximately 45 pupils. We are looking for an energetic and adaptable Primary Class Teacher to join our team, teaching a small upper-stages class.

Life in a small school is different. You will quickly become part of a close-knit team where everyone knows the children well, works collaboratively and contributes to the wider life of the school and island community. Our size gives teachers the opportunity to develop strong relationships with learners, respond flexibly to their needs and see the impact of their work every day.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about learning, teaching and achieving the best possible outcomes for every learner, who has high expectations and is committed to providing appropriate support and challenge; is reflective and enthusiastic about continually improving their practice, and enjoys working collaboratively as part of a small, dynamic whole-school team. You should be confident, independent and able to respond flexibly to the needs of a small rural school.

This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher who enjoys the opportunities that come with working in a small school. You will be part of a supportive community where relationships matter, collaboration is valued and there is genuine scope to shape learning experiences for children and young people.

Sanday offers the chance to experience island life while working in a welcoming and ambitious school community. We are particularly interested in candidates who are excited by the prospect of becoming part of that community, rather than simply working here.

The successful candidate must be able to work on Sanday and make the necessary arrangements to live on the island during the working week. Accommodation may be available on Sanday for the successful candidate, subject to availability and a rental charge.

Applicants must be registered, or in the process of registering, with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

Salary will be in accordance with the appropriate point on the Main Grade Teacher SNCT Salary Table, plus Distant Islands Allowance and any other applicable allowances.

The necessary qualification, experience and skills required for this role are detailed in the ‘must have’ section of the attached job profile. These criteria are used when shortlisting and making appointment decisions.

This post is a regulated role with children and requires Level 2 Disclosure with PVG scheme membership.

Applications close at 23:59 on Sunday 25 October 2026, with shortlisting taking place 26 October 2026 and interviews are scheduled from 27 October 2026.

For a discussion about the role contact Kristen Muir, Head Teacher, at kristen.muir@glow.orkneyschools.org.uk or on 01857 600 228.

We would welcome your feedback on our recruitment process.
