About our apprenticeship scheme

We are looking for a hard-working, motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Public Health apprenticeship scheme. Regardless of your age or previous experience (although you must be at least 18 years of age and not in full-time education), we’re welcoming applications from those that show potential, determination and a drive to succeed. In return we can give you the opportunity to kick-start your career under the management of our skilled and experienced staff, whilst earning, learning and achieving nationally recognised qualifications at the same time.

About the Role and Our Ideal Candidate

About the role

We have a new and exciting apprenticeship opportunity within our Public Health Team. In this role you will spend three years developing Public Health skills through supporting projects across Kingston that help us understand and improve the health of the population of the Royal Borough of Kingston. You will work closely with a range of professionals both within the local council, and across a range of other organisations (including the NHS, voluntary and community organisations). Examples of projects you may be asked to support include stopping smoking, healthy eating, preventing infection and improving health in schools.

In addition to your work with the Kingston Public Health team, you will be given time to study for a funded undergraduate degree (BSc) in Public Health, and will be supported to apply for professional registration as a Public Health Practitioner.

You will spend three days per week working with the Public Health team at Kingston Council, one day per week attending classes at the University of East London, and one day per week completing degree-related coursework.

Job summary:

• This is a three year, paid, training and development programme for someone who would like to build a career in Public Health.
• Contractual hours: 36 hours per week (60% of these hours will be spent working for Kingston Council, 20% will be allocated to degree-level study at the University of East London, 20% will be allocated to protected study time).
• The apprentice will be required to travel to the University of East London (UEL) once a week and spend time in Kingston Guildhall where the Public Health team are based.
• The undergraduate degree at UEL will be funded as part of the apprenticeship programme.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is keen to learn and is passionate about improving the health of Kingston residents. The ideal candidate will have good numerical and literacy skills (with a minimum of a C grade or equivalent in Maths and English GCSE, and a qualification at NVQ Level 3, such as A Levels or BTEC). You will have good written and verbal communication skills, be able to use your initiative and be able to juggle different tasks whilst working with a variety of people. As well as being IT literate we are looking for someone who is flexible, adaptable, enthusiastic about learning new skills, and keen to study for a degree in Public Health in addition to any other job specific training.

Please note, in order to qualify for apprenticeship funding and be considered for this post you must meet the following criteria:

• Hold a GCSE level C/equivalent in Maths and English or equivalent
• Hold at least two A Levels (or equivalent Level 3 qualifications)
• Not hold a qualification at degree level
• Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or another funded further education or higher education programme at the time you start your new apprenticeship.
• Be available to start the apprenticeship in January 2027.

Our Offer to You

Our apprenticeships are offered on a minimum contract duration of 12 months (some are longer depending on the level of apprenticeship you undertake), offer 23 days paid annual leave, access to our online staff benefits portal (including discounts at local and national shops, restaurants and attractions), the opportunity to undertake 3 volunteering days per year in Kingston, and a minimum starting salary of £22,432 per annum. We operate hybrid working, a flexible working model which allows staff to work from a variety of locations and staff are not required to work within the office 5 days a week.
