School Business Manager

Freshfield Primary School (On-Site)

Grade I31 to I35 £40,476 to £44,711 pro-rated term time only plus 1 week

Freshfield Primary School is looking for a dynamic and forward-thinking School Business Manager to lead our operational functions and help us embed smart, efficient systems that support excellence in education.

As our School Business Manager, you will be a key member of the senior leadership team, working closely with the Head teacher to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the school. You’ll take responsibility for overseeing the school office function and wider areas including finance, HR, premises management, data protection and health and safety – allowing our teachers to focus on delivering high quality teaching and supporting the holistic development of every child.
We are looking for someone who can:
- Lead and manage the school’s business functions including finance, HR, administration, premises and compliance.
- Identify opportunities to use digital tools and AI to streamline processes and increase efficiency.
- Drive forward our digital strategy in areas such as workflow automation, smarter data reporting, and cost-effective procurement.
- Ensure robust financial management and value-for-money decision-making.
- Work in close partnership with the Headteacher and senior leaders to support strategic planning and school development.
- Inspire and support staff in embracing change and building confidence with new systems.
You will also undertake the role of Clerk to the Governing Body, which includes preparing agendas and minutes, providing administrative support, advising on governance procedures, and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Proven experience in business or financial management (experience in a school setting is desirable but not essential)
- Strong leadership and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff, governors, and external partners
- A good understanding of finance, HR, premises management, and health and safety legislation
- A proactive and solution-focused approach to problem-solving
- Confidence in using ICT systems, including finance software, spreadsheets, and administrative platforms
- A commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and safeguarding practices
- A relevant qualification (such as CSBM, DSBM or equivalent) or the equivalent in experience
