Shape the Future of Digital Content at Woking Borough Council
About the Role
Are you passionate about creating accessible, user-centred content that makes a real difference? Do you thrive on simplifying the complex and leading the way in content design? If so, Woking Borough Council has an exciting opportunity for you to join our Digital Experience team as a Senior Content Designer!
At Woking Borough Council, you’ll be part of a forward-thinking, dynamic team dedicated to continuous digital innovation. This is your chance to shape the future of our digital services, making a real impact on the lives of our community members. We’re committed to fostering an inclusive environment where your ideas are valued, and your expertise drives positive change. As the Senior Content Designer, you will take the lead in shaping the content of our website, web apps, and other digital platforms, ensuring they meet the needs of our users and align with our strategic objectives. You'll be at the forefront of transforming services, working collaboratively with teams to design and implement end-to-end user journeys that are clear, accessible, and effective.
This role offers you the chance to influence content strategy, establish standards and style guidelines, and advocate for user-centred design across our organisation. From writing and editing engaging content to analysing user data and feedback, you’ll play a key role in delivering a first-class digital experience for our residents.
Your Key Responsibilities
You’ll be steering content design for complex products and services, ensuring simplicity, clarity, and accessibility. You’ll also be creating, maintaining, and optimising content that aligns with Government Digital Service (GDS) standards and WCAG guidelines. Your day-to-day work will see you participating in whole service transformation and influencing associated content strategy and product development; collaborating with product designers, developers, and stakeholders to craft seamless user journeys, while developing and implementing content standards, guidance, and style patterns that reflect our brand and values. Using analytics, user feedback, and research, you’ll evaluate and improve content strategies, review existing customer journeys and calls to action, and make recommendations to the Product team to improve self-service take-up.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking an experienced content professional who combines creativity with a relentless focus on the user. To succeed in this role, you’ll need substantial experience creating, publishing, and managing high-quality, user-centred content along with expertise in WCAG accessibility standards, SEO best practices, and modern content design tools. Proficiency with the Drupal CMS (Local Gov Drupal would be a plus) is desirable, but more importantly, you’ll be adept at delivering digital content projects that drive service improvement. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, and the capacity to enthuse stakeholders will be key to your success.
Why Join Us?
At Woking Borough Council, we are committed to delivering exceptional digital services that meet the needs of our community. As part of our Transformation and Digital Services team, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the future of our digital content, working in an environment that values innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
We offer a supportive and inclusive work environment with opportunities for professional development and career growth. We also offer a generous flexi time scheme with the ability to take two flexi days a month (subject to approval), membership of the local government pension scheme, discounted health and leisure membership, plus many more excellent benefits.
