Education Welfare Assistant
We are looking for a highly organised individual to join our Education Welfare Service.
About the role
The successful candidate will work in the Education Welfare Service and the broader Inclusion team to offer support to the service. You will have great administrative skills and high levels of communication. You will be in contact with schools and parents and other agencies on a daily basis. You will offer initial advice and information on attendance, children missing education, elective home education and penalty notices, you will refer complex queries to the Education Welfare Officers. You will track and monitor queries and maintain databases. You may be required on occasions to do some home visits.
You will be part of a growing and dynamic team. The current post is a 12-month opportunity as the existing postholder has secured a promotion within the team. The team comprises of one Team Manager, one Senior Education Welfare Officer, two Education Welfare Officers, and an Education Welfare Assistant.
An internal secondment available to existing North Somerset Council Staff would be considered. Please ensure you have the permission of your line manager before applying.
This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closed by 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood; This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.
North Somerset Council offers flexible working arrangements, a combination of working from home and the office. Your day-to-day activities will involve taking queries from a whole range of services both internal and external as well as from parents and carers. You will provide initial information and advice on a broad range of services within the Education Welfare Service. You will offer practical support to the Education Welfare Officers as the needed and support the service demand.
You will be required to work on your own initiative on a day-to-day basis and manage your workload as directed by your supervisor. Your line management will be with the Senior Education Welfare Officer.
This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.
About you
The successful candidate will have:
- Level 2 Maths and English or equivalent
- Evidence of a high level of ICT skills (user).
- An awareness and general understanding of legislation for attendance, Children Missing Education, Elective Home Education.
- Experience of working with schools, children, young people, and their families/carers.
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding protocols and the threshold levels for service users’ groups.
- Experience of liaising and working collaboratively with others within the same or similar fields of work.
