The starting rate for this position is £14.86 per hour, plus £2 per hour annual leave allowance (£16.86 per hour total). This is pro-rata to £27,897 per annum.

This is a 'bank' position, payable by the hour for approximately 14.40 to 21.60 hours per week based at Whitebeam Lodge, Merrow Depot, Merrow Lane, Guildford, GU4 7BQ.

The Countryside Estate Operations team within the Environment, Transport and Infrastructure directorate at Surrey County Council is seeking to appoint a Bank Countryside Litter and Maintenance Assistant.

We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic person to join our successful Countryside Estate Operations Team. The role involves travelling to our different countryside sites spread across Surrey and undertaking practical maintenance work, particularly in and around the rural car parks. Grass cutting, litter clearance, pot-hole filling, mending signs and talking to members of the public will all be in a day's work. The role will also involve emptying bins, picking litter and the collection of dumped waste material. You will undertake practical maintenance tasks to maintain, protect and improve the council's countryside estate.

The work will be varied and include a broad range of practical countryside, estate and landscape maintenance tasks. This will often involve working on your own, so you should be able to work reliably and conscientiously to complete tasks as instructed, to a high standard.

In addition, you will ensure effective records are kept and relevant health and safety arrangements are complied with, in order that the County Council's statutory obligations are met.

Some weekend and bank holiday working will be required.

About You

We're looking for someone who is able to demonstrate an understanding and experience of relevant practical skills. You'll need to be reliable, able to work unsupervised and an enthusiastic self-starter!

To be considered for interview, your CV and personal statement will need to evidence the following:

  • Skills and experience to undertake practical countryside maintenance tasks
  • Ability to drive or otherwise visit inaccessible locations, sometimes at short notice
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather and sometimes in difficult terrain
  • Able to work some weekends and evenings.
