Based at Walton Library, the starting salary for this role is £3,455.50 per annum for working 6 hours per week (Sundays). The full-time equivalent salary is £20,733 per annum.
As a Weekend Library Assistant, you will bring your enthusiasm to a role that provides vital services to the people of Surrey.
There is something for everyone at our libraries... Curious readers come looking for their next adventure. Students meet to revise for their exams. Families gather for Storytime and Rhymetime. Special interest groups share their passions. Older people access resources and secure their bus pass. The library is many different things to many different people.
Customer service is at the forefront of what we do, and you will need to utilise your positive attitude and resilience to deal with a wide range of enquiries. Libraries are busy, lively places to work that require creativity and initiative to ensure every customer has the best experience possible.
An average day might involve providing book recommendations, helping a customer use Microsoft Office, and taking part in a children's reading activity. You will also keep borrower records up to date and support library colleagues with events.
Our vision is for Surrey's libraries to become hubs of the community that all are proud of. We are looking for someone who shares this goal and is committed to creating a library where everyone feels welcome and is treated with fairness and respect.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to upload your CV and answer the following questions:
- What are your motivations for applying?
- What do you think good customer service looks like from a Weekend Library Assistant?
- Why do you feel the library is important to the community?
- Describe a time when you pursued an opportunity to learn something new.
The job advert closes at 23:59 on 01.10.2023.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews to be held on Saturday 7th of October. You will be asked to answer a few questions and read a short story. The main questions will be provided in advance of the interview, though follow up questions may also be asked should further information or examples be required.
Please note that the above rota is subject to temporary or long-term revision, when required, to meet the needs of the library service, including occasionally covering until 7pm.
Although based at Walton Library you may also work at Esher and Hersham Libraries, which are in the same group, and will travel to other locations to support the wider library network as required.
There are no staff parking facilities at libraries in Surrey, however there are pay and display car parks close to most locations. If using public transport, please check what options are available for you to travel to individual locations, and when making your application, consider your travel costs and arrangements.
