As one of England’s newest cities, Chelmsford is set to grow significantly over the next 25 years and beyond. The City Council will be instrumental in this change by shaping new development through our development management and long-term strategic planning roles. With a high quality of life, a diverse and successful economy, a vibrant city centre with some of the best schools in the country all surrounded by attractive countryside, Chelmsford is a great place to live, work and enjoy.

We adopted our current Local Plan in May 2020 and started a review of it in 2022. As part of this review, we are considering the amount and potential locations for new development of homes, jobs, and infrastructure.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the City Council’s Sustainable Communities Directorate for a Senior Planning Officer to work within the Spatial Planning Team to focus on housing and land supply evidence base documents, as well as the delivery of various types of new housing.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience of planning policy work as well as research/analysis of housing issues and solutions. This includes being involved in the preparation, consultation and examination of statutory development plans and supporting evidence base documents.

Educated with a relevant degree in town planning or related discipline with membership, or eligibility to be a member, of the Royal Town Planning Institute. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, flexibility and the ability to analyse, interpret and present often complex information in a clear and concise manner.

The post is permanent, working 30 hours a week and based at the Civic Centre
