We are seeking a talented and proven leader to spearhead the development of the new Innovation and Sector Development service within the Business and Skills Directorate at the West of England Combined Authority (WECA).
In a short space of time, WECA’s Business and Skills Directorate has taken great strides: developing a significant portfolio of projects and programmes which are delivering real tangible benefits to businesses and residents across the region, and at the same time creating a substantial pipeline of investment for the future. The ongoing delivery of business support services like Invest Bristol & Bath (IBB) and the Growth Hub continue to deliver results, and we have successfully led bids for new sector-led initiatives like 5G Smart Tourism, a Creative Scale-up Programme and two new Challenge Funds focussed on Research & Innovation and Low Carbon.
Looking forward, the emerging West of England Local Industrial Strategy proposes the development of a new Global Centre of Innovation Excellence in partnership with the region’s universities, businesses, key research and innovation assets. This role has a key part to play in translating this ambition into well measured and impactful interventions, drawing on a range of regional and national funding opportunities. You will design innovative approaches to supporting the region’s ‘super sectors’ where we have clear competitive advantages to derive further economic impact and success.
We are looking for someone who is strategically minded but has the ability to inspire others to deliver at scale and with impact. You will have significant experience of working in a complex stakeholder environment at a senior level and have demonstrated the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships to deliver. You will need to build a strong alliance with the region’s four universities and a range of businesses, to co-create and implement innovation based solutions to drive productivity improvements and economic growth. An appreciation of the political context within which WECA operates would be an advantage; the ability to build consensus across multiple interest, essential.
Interviews for this role are expected to take place on week commencing 29th July.
If this sounds like the role for you then we would be delighted to hear from you. For an informal conversation, please contact Stephen Bashford, Head of Business and Skills, on 07967 774040.
