East Devon is independently recognised as an outstanding place and so it follows that its council must also strive to be outstanding. Everything we do is aimed at ensuring that East Devon is a place that people want to live in, work in, visit and enjoy. Our ambition is to be an outstanding council which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment for East Devon, now and for future generations.
About the role
Recognising that this fixed-term contract could provide the ideal opportunity for a recently qualified further or higher education student looking to gain broad experience, we are seeking either an Environmental Health or Technical Officer, dependent on qualifications and experience, to join our small environmental protection team.
Undertaking all reactive environmental protection work in the Exmouth area of our district at a level suited to your skills and experience, you will spend your time investigating complaints from our residents about potential statutory nuisance and anti-social behaviour. Some of this work will involve low level enforcement and there will also be opportunities to undertake other proactive work which could include the review of our Public Spaces Protection Orders.
In return for your commitment, you’ll receive an excellent benefits package which includes: generous annual leave; flexi-time; access to a Local Government Pension Scheme, salary sacrifice cycle scheme, employee assistance programme and personal healthcare scheme. In addition, you’ll also be encouraged to take advantage of our outstanding learning and development opportunities.
You will hold a degree or diploma in Environmental Health and be EHRB registered to be considered for the Environmental Health Officer role. Alternative, you could be working towards EHRB full registration with demonstrable experience in a similar role if you are seeking a Technical Officer position.
For either role you will be adept at organising your workload and managing conflicting demands; and you will have excellent written and verbal communication skills enabling you to demonstrate respect and consideration for others as well as the ability to quickly build rapport with customers and stakeholders alike. You will have the ability to manage situations professionally and calmly.
You will also be fully conversant with Microsoft Office and database applications and able to carry out independent research. This role involves travelling throughout the district with equipment, so you will also need a valid driving license and access to a car or suitable mode of transport (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).
