About the role
Since April 2016 Surrey County Council Legal Services have been working in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council, East Sussex County Council and West Sussex County Council as part of Orbis Public Law. Working in a busy open plan office this role requires you to work cooperatively as part of a team to deliver a seamless business support and administrative service to more than 45 lawyers in Surrey County Council's legal department. The post is situated in a sensitive and confidential legal environment and requires exceptional organisational and IT skills, the ability to prioritise work and to clear focus on meeting deadlines. The post holder will be expected to make straightforward decisions relating to their role.
The Legal Support Officer will be responsible for the production and management of Court litigation bundles which includes photocopying, updating and indexing evidence.
The post holder will be expected to meet strict Court deadlines so ability to cope under pressure is essential. You will also need to liaise with Courts, other parties and agencies in relation to litigation bundles. The post holder will also be expected to provide secretarial support to lawyers e.g. typing correspondence, reports and documents and answering telephone calls. Other duties include maintaining information databases, administration work with regards to loaning and return of the county's deeds and legal library subscriptions.
You will be responsible for opening files for lawyers and the physical retrieval and archiving of such files. Access to files and books are located on three different levels within County Hall. You will be required to organise, locate, retrieve, and lift such materials and climb stepladders to access these. You will also handle incoming mail and answer the department's reception telephone line.
