Do you have experience of working in the field of homelessness and housing advice? Are you proactive, empathetic and organised?

The Housing team is looking for a part time Housing Options Adviser to join our busy team. The Homelessness Reduction Act has now been in place for a year and we are looking for a new team member to help us deliver this legislation.

Our focus is to prevent homelessness wherever possible, and to assist those who have become homeless to find somewhere to live. We operate a successful rent deposit scheme and are proud of our strong partnerships with local homelessness organisations and voluntary groups, which enable us to work together to help people in housing need.

We’re looking for someone with a positive, creative outlook with great people skills. You will have a case load and will need to be able to juggle a variety of tasks each day, including contacting new customers to provide advice on how they can resolve their housing problem, liaising with landlords, family members and supported accommodation providers, keeping customer records up to date and assessing applications under the homelessness legislation.

This post will have a particular focus on working with local letting agents and private landlords, to help us secure more privately rented homes for our customers.

You will need excellent written communication skills and be able to write accurate and easy to understand homelessness decision letters. Strong verbal communication skills are also needed for face to face meetings with customers and telephone advice. Being able to deliver a clear message about what the Council can and can’t provide to a customer is key, but the ability to listen and empathise with people in a vulnerable situation is equally important.
