Barnsley is changing and with a recently adopted Local Plan aimed at preserving what is special about the borough whilst also providing significant economic and housing growth opportunities, now is a great time to be joining our forward-thinking and dynamic Planning & Building Control Service. The Local Plan identifies a number of large-scale urban extensions, the likes of which have not been seen in the borough for generations. The borough also sits at the heart of Transport for the North’s Southern Pennines Corridor where a number of major transport infrastructure projects are anticipated, including HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail and potential strategic highway improvements. In readiness for this, we are restructuring the service to focus on maximising these opportunities to create fantastic, sustainable and resilient places which we will all be proud to have played our part in delivering.
As a Transport Planner you will work in a team advising the planning department on the highway safety and transportation implications of new development proposals. This will include advice on how we can minimise new trips by car through promotion of sustainable, alternative modes of transport but, where this is not feasible, working alongside our engineers to establish how we can ensure new traffic is a safely accommodated on the highway network without creating congestion.
We are therefore looking for an individual with experience of transport planning and/or highways development control with either a level 6 qualification (e.g. degree) or extensive equivalent experience. The successful candidate will also have good knowledge and understanding of planning and other relevant legislation and national and regional guidance as well as highly developed communication, influencing and negotiating skills and ability to resolve conflicting interests.
