Fleet Services is based at 2 locations within central Bedfordshire; Thorn Turn Depot, Houghton Regis and Sandy Depot, Sandy. All staff start and end work at these locations twice daily. All roles are split shift with staff working AM & PM shifts with a free time gap in between. Normal working hours are 25 hours per week, 5 hours a day split into two 2 ½ hour shifts.
Our Fleet Services team of Drivers and Passenger assistants are dedicated to providing safe, efficient transport for a range of customers. They include older people, adults with learning disabilities and children with special needs. Roles are spilt - 60% adult day care and 40% schools transport. The service allows customers to access day care and educational facilities – helping to make Central Bedfordshire a great place to work and live.
As a permanent member of staff working full year, on a term time only contract or as a Bank member of staff, you will be a key part of the team. Find your greatness by helping vulnerable customers enjoy life to the full.
Full year staff cover transport for day centres for older people and adults with learning disabilities. Term time staff cover transport for children with special educational needs. Full year staff work 52 weeks a year and term time staff work 36 weeks. Bank staff provide absence cover for permanent staff and regular work is available.
If you are applying to be a Passenger Assistant, you must be prepared to provide a caring, reliable service. We welcome candidates who have previous experience in the role, or who have experience as a carer for adults or children. Your job will involve helping customers in and out of our buses including using tail-lifts and ramps to help wheelchair users. You will also make sure each passenger has a safe, comfortable experience by fully engaging with them during the journey.
To be a Driver/Passenger Assistant you will need to have a category D1 driving licence which is essential to the role. You will drive our adapted mini buses taking people to and from day centres, schools and other establishments. Your main role will be to drive, but you will also be required to work as a Passenger Assistant when necessary. You must be able to demonstrate confidence and skill in operating one of our mini buses. Previous experience of this type of vehicle is desirable and this will be demonstrated during a driving assessment.
Our aim is to deliver customers safely from door-to-door. You must be smart and professional as well as punctual and polite. Above all, you will treat your customers with respect and dignity. You need to be patient, understanding and aware of issues surrounding disability, dementia and special needs. You also need to be ready for unexpected situations and to stay calm and collected whatever the circumstances.
