About the Job

We are recruiting for an individual, who has a passion and drive to lead a food and safety and imported food services team to provide a high quality service to its residents.

You will report directly to the Head of Administrative, Technical and Business Services and will lead on all aspects of food, health and safety regulation for the Council, as well as having responsibility for a number of other important Environmental Health Functions.

You will deliver an effective and efficient management and delivery of Food Safety and Regulation teams, services and functions, including food safety enforcement, imported food regulation, private water supplies, animal welfare, smoke free legislation, infectious disease control, port health, and health and safety enforcement, and other miscellaneous functions. You will have responsibility for the co-ordination of these functions, ensuring risks are identified and controlled and service delivery is compliant with legislative requirements and is in support of council objectives, particularly 'putting residents first'.

As the post holder you will also be highly knowledgeable in all aspects of the imported food health and safety industry and will have the confidence to provide relevant professional and technical advice and information to senior management, including full assessments of the potential effects of upcoming legislative change, particularly in respect of the imported food function. You will lead on government legislative changes and implementation surrounding all Brexit related issues.

About the person

To be successful in this post you will have either a Diploma or Degree in Environmental Health or a related and relevant area and have sufficient experience of managing large busy multidisciplinary teams undertaking inspections, investigation based enforcement activity, compliance based enforcement, technical case work and the provision of advice. You will also hold a CIEH Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection.

You will have a broad knowledge of responsibilities connected with this role under Health & Safety at Work legislation and a good role specific knowledge and understanding of the key parts of relevant legislation, best practice, guidance and an appreciation of emerging issues.

There may be many urgent priorities to deal with on a day to day basis and you will have a strong desire to continually raise your ability to prioritise work and to work under pressure, meeting expectations and SLA deadlines to a different level. You will also have a flexible can do attitude to ensure all urgent priorities are managed efficiently with minimum disruption to residents and business needs.

With your excellent verbal, written communication and customer care skills you will produce accurate Cabinet reports, briefing notes and correspondence to a high professional standard.
