About the Service

Our school-based SLT service is expanding! We are innovative, supportive, and outcome-focused, and have posts for Specialist Speech and Language Therapists working in mainstream schools, and specialist centres in Surrey (NHS Band 6 equivalent).

The School-Aged Speech and Language Therapy Service is part of Surrey County Council’s local offer to support the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities of children and young people within mainstream schools and specialist provision. The Service is part of the Vulnerable Learners Team in Surrey Children, Schools and Families Directorate, and as such works collaboratively with other teams such as educational psychology, learning and language support, REMA and Behaviour Support.

The main function and aim of the service is for children and young people in schools with speech, language and communication needs to receive the right support at the right time. This is achieved through assessment and intervention, equipping families and professionals with the skills and resources to work together to help and support children with SLCN. We work with children and young people with EHCPs (Education, Health & Care Plan) and those at SEN (Special Education Needs) support. In order to achieve these aims the service follows the ‘balance model’, offering universal, targeted and specialist support for families, the school environment, the school workforce, assessment and intervention

Within Surrey we work across the four geographical quadrants, each managed by a Quadrant Lead. The teams in each quadrant are made up of a skill mix of speech and language therapists and speech and language therapy assistants. We are offering four posts, working in either:

North East:  Epsom & Ewell, Spelthorne, and Elmbridge (base: Fairmount House, Bull Hill, Leatherhead KT22 7AH)

South East: Reigate & Banstead, Mole Valley, and Tandridge (base: Consort House, 5-7 Queensway, Redhill RH1 1YB)

North West: Woking, Runnymede, and Surrey Heath (base: Quadrant Court, 35 Guildford Road, Woking GU22 7QQ)

About the Role

This is a great opportunity to work across our mainstream and specialist centres teams. You would be responsible for working with the centre team to support the students and staff in these settings, working alongside and guiding any existing SLT / SLTAs who work in the settings. In addition to working in the centre you would also have allocated time to work with students in the mainstream part of the school and other local mainstream schools.

Your main duties in the role of a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist will include but not be limited to:

  • Clinical decision making in conjunction with school staff around the level of support needed to achieve the best possible outcome for the children on your defined caseload.
  • Providing support, training and shadowing opportunities to more junior colleagues, and formally line managing a junior member of the team.
  • Working with speech and language therapy assistants, setting targets for the children and young people they are supporting, and monitoring of the delivery and outcomes of their work.

To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence:

  • 2 years experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Experience in working with specialist settings or with specialist client groups, and appropriate formal and informal training in evidence based approaches used
  • Flexibility to adapt both clinical approach and communication style to ensure that therapy inputs and outcomes are functional and client centered
  • A BSc (Hons) degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered membership of the Health and Care Professions Council
  • Registered membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
