This is an exciting opportunity to be on the front line of a new and innovative way of working in the London Borough of Newham.
Sessional Community Neighbourhood Assistants
Community Neighbourhoods are localised networks bringing together physical assets like libraries and community centres with social assets like volunteering and sports activities with the aim to increase people’s networks. Community Neighbourhoods are at the heart of the Council’s vision for developing community resilience. By building the community infrastructure which enable residents to network, volunteer and be active, Community Neighbourhoods will be central to strengthening community cohesion and resilience.
Sessional Community Neighbourhood Assistants will be the ‘face’ of Community Neighbourhoods within libraries, community centres and at Community Neighbourhood events, engaging with residents and ensuring the smooth running of the facilities on a day-to-day basis.
Much of the work will require you to undertake library duties such as stock tidying, floor walking and assisting residents with self-service and online systems. However the remit of Community Neighbourhoods also encompasses community centres, events and environmental street audits so Sessional Community Neighbourhood Assistants will also have the opportunity to work in these environments.
Whilst there are a number of sessional opportunities across our service on most days we cannot guarantee a minimum number of working hours per week.
You need to relish working with the public, enjoy interacting with residents and be able to bring your experience of this to the role. You must also be able to demonstrate you can work in an organised way, with good literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.
Sessional Community Neighbourhood Assistants support the delivery of the service to our residents by being available to work at peak times on an ‘as and when’ basis. You will be available at short notice to work in libraries, community centres or at events mainly mid-week during our core opening hours of 8am-8pm but also in the evenings and at weekends. The role does, however, provide flexibility for you to state in advance the times that you are available for work.
A high degree of flexibility will be required as you may be asked to work in a variety of locations as and when required.
If you are motivated, flexible, and would like an opportunity to work across a range of functions in Community Neighbourhoods we want to hear from you.
