We are looking for an Area Planning Manager to join ourDevelopment Management Service, leading the work of two teams covering thewestern part of Tower Hamlets, that help to shape development opportunities and contribute to on-going regeneration and renewal.
Tower Hamlets is a high profile central London borough, whichincludes the Isle of Dogs, City Fringe and Olympic Legacy OpportunityAreas. We have the highest targets fornew homes and jobs in the capital, with a rich heritage protected by over fiftyconservation areas, hundreds of listed buildings and the Tower of London WorldHeritage Site. As one of London’s mostdiverse boroughs, we work hard to ensure that we manage growth sustainably andthat the benefits are shared by all of our communities. The Council has embarked on an ambitious housingcapital delivery programme which aims to deliver 1,000 new council homes by2022, with an additional 1,000 in the pipeline.
The successful candidate will be part of the leadership team for the service,overseeing all development management activity in the west of the borough - includingvibrant Brick Lane, Bethnal Green and Whitechapel, the City Fringe areas of Spitalfeilds and Aldgate, historic riverside at Wappingand residential areas in Stepney.
We arelooking for candidates who can coordinate major and strategicdevelopment proposals, by framing negotiations with applicants to ensure theCouncil’s planning and place-making objectives are delivered. You will also be responsible for managing resourcesand supporting officers across two teams, overseeing performance to ensure all decisionsare made in a timely manner, with consistent levels of customer service.
The Area Manager will foster proactive working relationshipswith key development partners, stakeholders and elected members, including the planning committees. You will promote the effective use of planningperformance agreements to deliver positive planning outcomes and engage in thecontinuous improvement programme for the service.
We are seeking experienced planners whowant to develop their management career and are driven to deliver results. You will need to be self-motivated, solutionfocussed with strong leadership and communication skills. A degree or post graduate qualification in planning (or a similar discipline) with eligibility for RTPI membership.
